Aug. 11, 2006

Santa Clara, Calif. - Three Santa Clara University tennis student-athletes were named ITA Scholar Athletes this week, as Kim Daniel, Stephanie Herrmann and Jan Macek received the honor. Daniel and Hermann earned the distinction for the first time, while Macek is now a two-time ITA Scholar Athlete honoree.

Daniel, who posted an impressive 3.93 GPA in 2005-06, played both singles and doubles for the Broncos this past year, posting a 10-10 singles record. In addition to being named an ITA Scholar Athlete, Daniel was also named WCC Spring All-Academic and earned a spot on the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Daniel is on track to graduate with a degree in accounting in 2007.

Herrmann, a Los Altos resident, is coming off a strong freshman year in which she played in the no. 6 singles slot for the Broncos. She posted a 3.55 GPA and also made the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll. With Daniel as her doubles partner, she reached the quarterfinals of the Saint Mary's Invitational last fall.

"This recognition is a testament to the dedication that both Kim and Stephanie have to academics," said women's tennis head coach Damon Coupe. "They both push themselves hard academically, while also performing for us on the court. We are extremely proud to have them as part of our team."

Macek, who graduated this past June with a finance degree from Santa Clara, earned the honor for the second straight year after posting a 3.57 GPA. He is also a three-time member of the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll and was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. In his final year with the Broncos, the native of Freising, Germany earned first-team All-WCC honors as he played no. 1 singles for Santa Clara all year. He was also a WCC Spring All-Academic honoree.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
