Helms Named WCC Cross Country Athlete of the Month

    SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara University fifth-year senior Michael Helms has been named the West Coast Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Month for September, the league announced today.

    Helms, a native of Poway, Calif., ran a league-best 8,000-meter time of 24:53.0 at last weekend's Stanford Invitational and has been among the Broncos' top two runners throughout the season. His best finish of the season was a 10th-place effort at the Aggie Open, hosted by UC Davis with an 8,000-meter time of 25:27.90.

    After redshirting the 2001 season to train for a fifth year of eligiblity, Helms teams with senior Thomas Chapman as the Broncos' top two runners. The duo have trained together for the last four seasons and expect to provide Santa Clara with an opportunity for its best finish ever in WCC and NCAA regional competition next month.

    The Santa Clara men travel to the San Francisco Invitational Sunday at Golden Gate Park.
