North Dakota State won the 47th annual Cable Car Classic Championship with an 87-70 victory of Rider.  Named to the All-Tournament team were Brandon Clark of Santa Clara, Seth Gearhart of Rice, Anthony Myles of Rider and TrayVonn Wright of North Dakota State.  The MVP was Marshall Bjorklund of North Dakota State.  The Frandsen Award was given to Mike Felt of North Dakota State. The O'Connor Award was given to Keith Washington of Rice.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A frantic final seconds saw the Broncos come all the way back from a 12-point second half deficit and take their only lead of the game with 6.9 seconds left in regulation, but Rice had the final answer on a length of the court rush and layup by Keith Washington for the winning basket in a thrilling 67-66 win for the Owls in the consolation game of the 47th Annual Cable Car Classic at the Leavey Center on Saturday night.  

Santa Clara falls to 2-4 on the season while Rice moves to 3-4. 

After trailing by as many as 12 throughout the game, the Broncos were able to get their first lead when Brandon Clark stole the ball from Austin Ramljak on Rice's inbounds play and scored a layup for a 66-65 lead with 6.9 seconds left.

Washington took the next inbounds pass and drove the length of the court for his game-winning layup with no time left on the clock. After an officials review, 0.3 seconds were added to the clock and SCU's inbounds pass was deflected and time expired with the ball still in the air. 

Clark's layup with 56 seconds left got the Broncos within two at 63-61 and Seth Gearhart missed a three on the other end giving the Broncos a chance to tie the game.

Evan Roquemore made one of two foul shots with 20.1 seconds left to get the Broncos within a point but Gearhart converted both of his foul shots at the other end for  a 65-62 Rice lead with 16.2 seconds left. 

The Owls fouled Clark on his way to the basket and he calmly sank both shots to get back within a point at 65-64 to set the stage for a dramatic finish.

For the game Santa Clara shot 40.7% from the field (34-of-59), including 28.6% from beyond the arc (6-of-21).  The Broncos collected 36 rebounds, 4 steals, 12 assists, 5 blocks and 6 turnovers.

Roquemore led the Broncos with 17 points, including 3 of 7 from beyond the arc.  He added four assists.  Clark scored 15 points with three assists and three rebounds.  Jared Brownridge scored 15 with three assists and three rebounds.  Jerry Brown was a rebound short of his second double-double for the Broncos, scoring 13 points with nine rebounds and two steals.

Rice shot 51.2% from the field (22-of-43), including 40% from beyond the arc (6-of-15). The Owls collected 27 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 16 assists and 11 turnovers.

Rice had four players in double figures including Sean Obi (17), Gearhart (15), Max Guercy (11) and Washington off the bench (11).  Obi added nine rebounds and Marcus Jackson had seven assists.

The Owls took the early lead and never trailed in the first half. Obi got the first Rice bucket on a putback 32 seconds in and hit consecutive layups off assists from Marcus Jackson to stake the Owls to 6-2 lead just under two minutes in. Obi hit 8 of 9 field goal attempts for a career-high point total.

Brown kept the Broncos within striking distance with a putback at 15:50 to close the gap to 9-6. Brown led SCU with 10 first half points making all four field goal attempts and both free throws. 

A Clark layup pulled SCU within a point at 9-8 with just under five minutes gone in the half but Rice responded with a 5-0 run to up its lead to six at 13:42.  Every run by the Broncos was countered by Rice and SCU couldn't close the gap. 

A three-pointer by Julian Clarke made the score 16-12 at 12:43 but Seth Gearheart replied with his first of two threes on the night. 

Brown's tip in and basket on a goaltending call and an Evan Roquemore three were part of a 7-2 Broncos run to make the score 21-19 at 9:10. 

A pair of free throws by Jalen Richard, his only points of the game moved the Broncos within 28-25 at the 6:23 mark, but Obi scored six of Rice's nine straight points over the next two minutes to give the Owls their largest lead at 37-25 with just under three minutes left in the half.

Brown scored on a putback and Clarke hit a jumper to get the deficit down to eight with less than a minute left in the half. Brown had a nice block on a layup attempt by Andrew Drone and Brownridge stepped to the line for a one-and-one with 15 seconds left. Brownridge missed and Rice took advantage with an uncontested layup by Washington as the first half buzzer sounded for a 39-29 lead.

Obi led all first half scorers with 12 points making all six of his field goal attempts. 

NOTES:  The Broncos used the same starting lineup with Evan Roquemore, Jared Brownridge, Brandon Clark, Jerry Brown and Robert Garrett ... Roquemore moved past Marlon Garnett into 18th place on SCU's career scoring chart when he drained a jumper in the lane at 18:07 of the second half. That gave Roquemore 1,348 points surpassing the 1,346 Garnett accumulated ... Roquemore's four assists also helped him move past No. 3 Brody Angley in career assists with 507.
