GCI Great Alaska Shootout Central | Game Notes | 2017-18 Basketball Tickets

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Santa Clara men's basketball looks to close out its trip to Alaska with a victory when it faces Sam Houston State on Saturday.

The Broncos and Bearkats match up in the seventh-place game of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout with tipoff set for 1 p.m. Pacific from Alaska Airlines Center. Santa Clara fell (1-4) to host Alaska-Anchorage, 78-73, in overtime on Thursday in a consolation bracket game. Sam Houston State (2-3) lost to the College of Charleston, 59-49, in Thursday's other consolation contest. The Broncos are making their third appearance in the 40-year tournament, which is ending this season.

Maleke Haynes and Jacob Lampkin each scored 22 points to help Alaska-Anchorage rally and then outlast Santa Clara. Haynes, one of four Division I transfers on the Seawolves roster, hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. Senior guard/forward Henry Caruso (18 points/10 rebounds) led four players in double figures for the Broncos who shot 56 percent from the floor, but were out-rebounded 32-25 and suffered a season-high 15 turnovers.

Feagin leads the team in scoring (17.4 ppg) on 49 percent shooting from the field while Caruso is second at 15.4 ppg (48 FG percentage) and leads in rebounding (8.4 pg). Hauser is third on the team in scoring (10.2) and first in assists (4.4 pg), and senior center Emmanuel Ndumanya is second in rebounding at 5.0 per game. The Broncos are plus-3.6 in turnover margin per game, but minus-4.4 in rebounding.

YEAR TWO UNDER SENDEK
The Broncos are in their 111th year of existence, including second under Herb Sendek, who has been successful in each of his three previous head-coaching stops. With a resume that includes 18 postseason appearances and three conference coach of the year awards, Sendek, was one of the three youngest coaches with 400 or more career victories He is in his 24th season as a collegiate head coach with stops at Arizona State, North Carolina State and Miami (Ohio).

QUICK HITS
• Santa Clara and Sam Houston State, which plays in the Southland Conference, are meeting for the first time. Senior forward Chris Galbreath Jr. leads the Bearkats in both scoring (13.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.4 pg).
• The Broncos are playing in a neutral site tournament for the fifth-straight season and seventh time in the last eight.
• KJ Feagin, a 2016-17 all-league pick last season, was selected to the preseason All-WCC team. Last season when he missed 14 games, he was one of the most accurate shooters in the WCC. He shot a team-high 49.0 percent from behind the 3-point line, as well a team-best 87.9 percent on free throws. He also shot 49.0 percent from beyond the 3-point line in WCC games, which ranked second.
• In the first three games, the Broncos started three seniors in Jarvis Pugh, Henry Caruso and Emmanuel Ndumanya and a pair of juniors in Feagin and Matt Hauser. Freshman Josip Vrankic was inserted for Pugh the last two games.

CLOSING TIME
Santa Clara has either led or been tied during the final four minutes of regulation of the last three games, but unable to come away with a victory. The Broncos were tied with Cal Poly (Nov. 18) three times in the last 2:54, led Idaho (Nov. 22) by three with 3:43 on the clock and were ahead by seven with 3:57 remaining in the second half against Alaska-Anchorage (Nov. 23).

NORTH TO ALASKA
Four of Santa Clara's 12 nonconference games are part of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout, the oldest regular-season college basketball tournament, though it's in its final season. The Broncos are making their third appearance in the event, which is in its 40th year. After falling to host Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, the Broncos had one day off to prepare for Sam Houston State. College of Charleston, Cal Poly, CSU-Bakersfield, Central Michigan and Idaho are the remaining participants in the eight-team event. The Broncos played during 1983-84 and 1991-92 seasons, and had a 3-2 record in those appearances.

DOUBLING UP
Henry Caruso registered his fifth-career double-double (second at Santa Clara) in Thursday's loss to Alaska-Anchorage, posting a team-best 18 points and 10 rebounds. His two double-doubles have occurred in the last three games. Caruso had 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds vs. Cal Poly (Nov. 18). The senior posted three double-doubles at Princeton. Caruso is fifth in the West Coast Conference in rebounding (8.4 pg).

TRENDS
Henry Caruso, a 76-percent free-throw shooter at Princeton, has hit 27 of 30 (90 percent) from the line this season ... Caruso and KJ Feagin have reached double figures in scoring in all five games ... Caruso has played all but 1:34 in the last three games. He was subbed out for 17 seconds in the second half of the Idaho contest (Nov. 22) and for 1:17 in the first half vs. Alaska-Anchorage (Nov. 23) ... Matt Hauser has scored in double figures in four game, including the last three ... Josip Vrankic played 53 minutes in the first three games and 60 in the last two.

Anthony Passarelli (play-by-play) and John Stege (analyst) will call the action during the season on radio and through TheW.tv at home.
