Men’s Basketball Signs International Forward for 2018-19

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Guglielmo (Willie) Caruso is the latest addition to the Santa Clara men's basketball program.

The 6-foot-9 forward from Naples, Italy, has extensive international playing experience.

He participated in the 2017 Under-18 European Championships national team in the European Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia where he averaged 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Caruso, who will join the team as a true freshman in the fall, is No. 37 on the Eurohopes Basketball Prospects – Ranking 1999 list. He most recently played on the Cuore Napoli Basket team.

"We are very excited to add Willie Caruso to our Bronco roster and to welcome him to our Santa Clara University community," head coach Herb Sendek said. "Willie is an athletic, versatile frontcourt player, who impacts winning on both ends of the floor."

Caruso joins four other spring additions to the Santa Clara roster, including three transfers.

DJ Mitchell is a 6-foot-8 forward who played the last two years at Wake Forest, Tai Wynyard is a 6-foot-10 forward who spent the last two seasons at Kentucky, and Josh Martin is a 6-foot-7 forward from Cal Poly.

Wynyard and Mitchell will sit out 2018-19. Martin is a graduate transfer.

Juan Ducasse (Montevideo, Uruguay), Keshawn Justice (Madison, Wisc.) and Trey Wertz (Charlotte, N.C.) inked national letters of intent in the fall, and Zeke Richards (Oak Park, Calif.) signed in the spring. All four will be true freshmen in 2018-19.
