REDWOOD City, Calif. - The first annual West Coast Conference Challenge did go on Saturday despite forecasts for inclement weather and choppy water at the Redwood Shores in Redwood City, Calif. Santa Clara hosted the six-team dual meet event attended by Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's and San Diego.
The Bronco men and women went a combined 5-0 during the morning session despite the strong headwinds, defeating Saint Mary's in the men's varsity eight and novice eight, while the women defeated the Gaels in the varsity eight, novice four and junior varsity eight.
Gonzaga's men and women's varsity eight squads defeated San Diego's varsity eight squads in their dual meet in the morning, while Sacramento State's men and women's crews combined to go 4-1 against Loyola Marymount before the break. The Hornets defeated the Lions in the men's varsity eight and novice eight, with the women's varsity eight and junior varsity eight also registering convincing wins. The Lions' women's novice eight pulled out the only victory for LMU in the morning with its 1:36 victory over Sacramento State's women's novice eight.
The afternoon witnessed San Diego sweep all three races from Saint Mary's, taking the women's junior varsity eight, varisty eight and men's varsity eight races from the Gaels. Sacramento State also took two races from SMC, with the Hornets coming up victorious in the men's junior varsity eight and women's novice eight.
Gonzaga won both of its afternoon races, winning the men and women's varsity eight races over Sacramento State.
Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount finished off day one's activities with five races at Redwood Shores. The Broncos took three of the five races, winning the men and women's junior varsity eight along with the men's varsity eight. LMU took the women's varsity four and the women's varsity eight races.
Day two will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday morning in Redwood City, with the final race being started at 12:15 p.m.
