Men's Crew Wins Varsity Eight Petite Final at Newport Regatta

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's varsity eight claimed a win in the petite finals at the Newport Regatta in Newport Beach, Calif. as the SCU crew raced in its last meet before the WIRA Championships. The varsity eight, four and novice four boats were all in action for the Broncos.

"Today shows huge improvement for us," said head coach Tony Barcia. "I am looking forward to more of the same in the next two weeks leading up to the WIRA's, the focal point of our season."

The SCU varsity eight finished fourth in its heat with a time of 6:08.9 to advance to the petit finals. In the petit final, SCU pulled a time of 6:11.2 to claim the win. The Broncos defeated UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount and San Diego State in the race.

In the novice four, SCU continued its strong showing with a second-place finish in the seven-boat race. The Broncos pulled a time of 6:20.9 to finish second to USC, which pulled a 6:15.4.

SCU recorded another second-place finish in the varsity four race with a time of 7:19.8. Long Beach State won the race in a time of 6:43.5.

The Broncos will return to action at the WIRA Championships on April 29 on Lake Natoma.
