Men's Rowing Finishes Third at California Challenge Cup

California Challenge Cup Results | OCC Dual Results

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing opened its 2020 season over the weekend with the California Challenge Cup Saturday and a dual with Orange Coast College Sunday.

A third place finish by the Varsity 8 in the challenge cup highlighted the weekend.

"We had a very solid start to our racing season on Saturday at the California Challenge Cup," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "It was a great regatta and the team gained a lot of racing experience going down the short 1250-meter course five times against different opponents. I thought our team handled it well and the coxswain group did a good job managing the conditions. All of our boats performed at a reasonably high level for this time of year and the Varsity 8 took third behind the two boats from Cal. A special thanks to AJ Brooks at UC Irvine for putting on a well-run regatta and what a great venue for this type of racing."

Sunday the Broncos topped Orange Coast College with their 2nd Varsity 8 and Novice 8 boats and finished behind OCC with the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4.

"We had mixed results for the Orange Coast College race," Farwell said. "Our Novice 8 and 2nd Varsity 8 both won their races. These were good results in challenging conditions. Our Varsity 8 had a very hard fought race but came up short. Orange Coast took it to us right off the start and got out on us early and just held us off - they put out a great effort and they earned the win. They absolutely wanted it more than we did and we went into this race with an over-confident mindset. That won't happen again - I didn't have them ready for racing Sunday morning and the guys put forth a very mediocre performance. The silver lining is that it is very early in the season, we made a mistake, we will all learn from it, and we have approximately three weeks to prepare for our race with Cal which will be very challenging for our team."

Santa Clara is off until a March 21 dual with Cal in Oakland.
