Former Bronco Goalkeeping Standout Joe Cannon Named MLS All-Star

July 17, 2006

Santa Clara, Calif. - Major League Soccer today announced that former Santa Clara University men's soccer goalkeeper Joe Cannon was named to the 2006 MLS All-Star team. The MLS All-Stars take on Chelsea FC of the English Premier League on Saturday, August 5 at 3:30 p.m. PT live on ESPN. The selection marks the fourth time that Cannon has been picked for the MLS All-Star team.

Cannon `98, a two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year (2002, 2004), continues to be one of MLS' top goalkeepers in 2006 despite injury problems that have forced him to miss four games this season. So far in 2006, he has posted two shutouts and a 1.35 goals against average, while helping the Colorado Rapids to third place in the Western Conference. Cannon, who has twice been named the Rapids team MVP, played in his first MLS All-Star Game in 2001 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose. He currently ranks in the top five all-time in MLS in five different goalkeeping categories. Prior to playing for Colorado, Cannon spent four seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes, where he helped the team capture its first MLS Cup Championship in 2001.

Cannon played three seasons at Santa Clara and finished his career with a 0.94 goals against average and 15 shutouts, while helping the Broncos to three NCAA Tournament appearances. His 518-minute shutout streak in 1995 ranks second all-time in school history. He was also named WCC All-Academic on two occasions (1996, 1997).
