BERKELEY, Calif. – In its second match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, No. 35 Santa Clara bested No. 38 Boise State in the tournament consolation at Cal. Santa Clara improved to 3-1 on the season with the strong 4-1 win. The Broncos finished the weekend tournament with one win and one loss after a tough defeat Friday, 4-1, to No. 20 Michigan.
"I thought it was a solid team effort especially from Matt Kecki," said Santa Clara head coach Derek Mills. "He really stepped up today."
Despite a Boise State win at No. 1 doubles, Santa Clara took the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 2 by veterans Kecki and Tom Pham and a clutch 8-7 victory by Ashot Khacharyan and Eugene Muchysnki at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, No. 65 John Lamble pulled off a big win with an upset 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 28 Andrew Bettles. Kecki stepped up with a 6-3, 6-3 victory of his own, and dependable Tom Pham made quick work of his opponent 6-1, 6-0.
Pham's win was the 72nd of his Santa Clara career, tying him with Erich Chen (2000-2004) for second-most in program history. Pham improved to 8-2 on the season including 3-0 in dual match (regular season) play.
In the ITA Kick-Off weekend final, No. 14 Cal wound up beating No. 20 Michigan, 4-3, to earn the berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
For its next match, Santa Clara will travel north and face Washington on Fri., Feb. 1 at 5 pm. On Sat., Feb. 2 they will have a rematch against Boise State. Both matches are on the Washington campus in Seattle, Wash.
