Men’s Tennis to Face UC Santa Barbara at ITA Kick Off Weekend in Los Angeles

Men’s Tennis to Face UC Santa Barbara at ITA Kick Off Weekend in Los Angeles
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis returns to Los Angeles for the second straight weekend when it takes on UC Santa Barbara as part of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick Off Weekend on Saturday.

Santa Clara's appearance at the Kick Off Weekend will mark the first time since 2013 at one of the two biggest tournaments in the country along with the National Outdoor Championship.

By finishing No. 67 in the final 2019 Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Tennis team rankings, the Broncos earned the opportunity to partake in the 12th annual tournament where the top-90 teams have the chance to participate.

"The Kick-Off Weekend is a great opportunity earned by the 2018-19 team and the good work we've done over the last four years as it will give us a chance to play some of the teams we don't normally get to play against," said Broncos head coach Niall Angus.  "UCSB is a team, although reasonably local, that we have not played in a number of years and they've consistently been a top-40 team in the country and this season, they have a top-10 player in Joseph Guillin.  So it is a great opportunity for our players to measure themselves and not only that but to progress in the national tournament."

The first two rounds of the tournament will take place January 24-27, 2020 at 26 different facilities across the country.  During the weekend, 60 teams will travel to 15 host sites to participate.  Each of the 15 regional host institutions will welcome three other teams for a single-elimination event, with the winners advancing to the National Team Indoors, hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

USC, which finished No. 8 last season, is the regional host welcoming Santa Clara, UC Santa Barbara (No. 38) and UNC Wilmington (No. 80).

Santa Clara, the No. 3 seed in the regional, and No.2 seed UCSB will face each other at 10 a.m. on Saturday with No. 1 seed USC taking on No. 4 seed UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m.

The winning teams will play each other at 1 p.m. on Sunday with the loser's bracket at 10 a.m.
