SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Continuing Santa Clara University's strong commitment to helping others, Santa Clara women's rowing held an ergathon last week in support of Habitat for Humanity's "Nickels for Nails" program that collects spare change to use towards materials used to build affordable housing for low income families.
The event went from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and featured two rowing machines in front of the Benson Center. Each rower that participated rowed for an hour to do their part to help raise money for the less fortunate in the ergathon (continually working on the rowing machine). There was also a table with information about the "Nickels for Nails" program where people could donate or learn more.
Collegiate rowing across the country has a long history with Habitat for Humanity. The hard work and tenacity that come with being a rower go hand in hand with raising money and building homes for the needy.
"We were thrilled to work with Habitat for Humanity through their 'Nickels for Nails' program," said Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz. "Many other collegiate rowing teams have worked with Habitat for Humanity in the past; there is strong connection between the ethic of teamwork, diligence and selflessness that rowing promotes, and the ethic of building communities through hard work that Habitat for Humanity tries to promote. We hope to continue to work with them in the future."
