Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team won their fourth match of the season this afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center, besting visiting UC Davis 4-3. The Broncos received strong play in singles, as they won the first three singles contests on their way to victory. Stephanie Herrmann, playing on Court 6, clinched the dual match for SCU, the second time this season she put herself in position to secure the necessary fourth point for her squad.
Santa Clara captured the doubles point thanks to victories from Courts 2 and 3. Myra Davoudi and Stephanie Galainena teamed up at the No. 2 spot to beat Nancy Mok and Audrey Wingo 8-4, while Erika Barnes and Stephanie Herrmann formed a formidable tandem that Jessica Harris and Jenna Kappel were unable to overcome at the No. 3 position, falling 8-5. Robin Guier and Ally Muller prevented the Bronco sweep by defeating Casey Knutson and Kelly Leathers 8-5 on Court 1.
The Broncos used their momentum from doubles and carried it over to singles, capturing the first three matches to clinch the contest. Knutson dominated Wingo at the No. 3 spot, winning 6-1, 6-1, while Davoudi took care of business after her 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kaitlin Callan on Court 5. Herrmann defeated Emma Shapiro 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot that enabled Santa Clara to win its second home match of the season. The Aggies rallied, however, to take the next three singles matches to account for the final margin.
Santa Clara improves to 4-7 on the year and returns to action tomorrow afternoon when No. 68 Pacific invades the Degheri Tennis Center. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
