SAN DIEGO - The 20th-ranked Santa Clara University volleyball team did not open defense of its 2000 West Coast Conference Championship as well as it had hoped, falling to San Diego in three games tonight at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Game scores were 30-28, 30-21, 30-26.
With its third straight loss, Santa Clara falls to 7-4 overall, 0-1 in league play, while San Diego improves to 8-3, 1-0.
Freshman middle blocker Toni Muratore led the Broncos with 12 kills. As a team, SCU was outhit .318 to .125 and outblocked 8-2.
San Diego was led by Noel Frohman's 19 kills. Lindsey Lampert added 14 in the Torero victory.
The Broncos return to the Bay Area but will compete on the road tomorrow night at Saint Mary's in continuing WCC action. That match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga.
