San Diego State Pulls Away from Water Polo in Conference Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In the first of three straight at home, Santa Clara women's water polo fell behind in the first half and was unable to recover in its Golden Coast Conference opener.

Karli Canale scored three times and Emily Bennett had two goals and two assists for San Diego State which never trailed in an 8-4 victory on Friday.

Hailey Eberle had one goal and one assist, and Kelly Frumkin assisted on three markers for the Broncos (8-7, 1-0).

The Aztecs (8-9, 2-0), who have won four of their last five, tallied the first three goals of the game and then were able to answer each push by Santa Clara.

Maggie Oys scored on the power play with 17 seconds left before halftime to cut the SDSU lead to 3-1, but Haley Hagerty added a goal with 1 second on the clock.

Goals by Eberle and Emma Allegrucci midway through the third quarter made it a two-goal spread, but Delaney Binette and Bennett each scored in the final 3:07 of the period for the Aztecs to make it a 7-3 cushion.

Zoe Morgan registered seven blocks to pick up the win in net for the Aztecs who were just 2-for-7 with the extra attacker.

Santa Clara connected on four of 11 chances on the power play. However, they were out-shot 30 to 18.

Lydia Dadd made nine saves, including five in the final quarter, for the Broncos.
