Broncos Turn In Good Early Season Performance At WCC Challenge Cup

MALIBU, Calif. - The Santa Clara track team kicked off their third season Saturday at the WCC Challenge Cup in Malibu, Calif. The Broncos were joined by Loyola Marymount, San Francisco and host Pepperdine at the event in which saw new all-time and personal records for Santa Clara athletes.

Freshman Annie Murphy-Hagan went into the record books after finishing the women's 3k in 10:31.32, a third place finish and the second-best all-time for a Santa Clara track athlete. Also reaching new milestones in the women's 3k were senior Lauren Swigart and junior Adriane Puetz, who finished 6th and 7th respectively. Both Swigart and Puetz established new personal records - 10:42.46 for Swigart and 10:48.74 for Puetz.

In the women's 1500 meters, sophomore Veronica Vazquez led a pack of three consecutive Broncos across the finish line, while freshman Becky Costigan finished the women's 800 meters in fourth place, just .20 seconds behind the third place finisher, with a time of 2:26.81.

For the men's team, junior Mike Delaurenti picked right up where his cross country season left off, finishing the men's 3k in third place with a time of 8:55.30. On his heels were A.J. Blumel, who finished 6th with a time of 9:09.71 and freshman Stephen Koch 7th in 9:10.80.

Freshman Tony Dipre made a name for himself in the all-time recordbooks after finishing 4th in the men's 1500 meters in a time of 4:03.19, the fourth best in Santa Clara history. Derek Brown finished a very close third place in the men's 400 meters - four one-hundredths of a second close - with a time of 53.67 seconds, and George Sanchez finished 3rd and 4th in the men's 100 and 200 meter dashes, respectively.

The Broncos will continue their training this week in preparation for the Aggie Invitational hosted by UC Davis on Saturday, March 10 in Davis, Calif.
