SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara track team continued to set new records with their performances at the Hornet Invite Saturday, both personal and school. The meet served as the Broncos final opportunity to qualify for next weekend's Cal-Nevada Championships and the Stanford Invitational.
Junior Michael Delaurenti was the lone winner of the day, winning the men's 3000 meters with a time of 8:49.39. Delaurenti was followed in order by teammates Alex Harkins (9:07.29), AJ Blumel (9:14.13) and Andy Backus (9:30.51).
In the women's 3000 meters, Adriane Puetz had her strongest finish of the season, a 5th place showing with a time of 10:27.13, just hundredths of a second ahead of freshman Annie Murphy-Hagan (10:27.61) and just hundredths of a second behind Shannon Bell's school record of 10:27.12 set in 2006.
In a separate 3000 meter race, Danielle Miller finished 5th in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase, her first barrier race of the season with a time of 11:46.05. For the men, Stephen Koch ran the men's 3000 meter steeplechase for the second straight event, and finished 9th with a time of 9:55.87.
Veronica Vazquez and Carrie Pogorelc each set personal records in the women's 5000 and 400 meters, respectively. Vazquez finished 5th with a time of 18:07.18, the best mark of the season for the team, and Pogorelc also set a personal record with a time of 62.34 in the 400.
The final record of the day was in the men's 4x100 relay, a 44.88 second performance by George Sanchez, Ryan Ward, Greg Stettler and Chris Furnari.
The Broncos will return to the track next weekend as the team splits to take part in the Cal-Nevada Championships in Fresno, Calif. and the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
