Delaurenti Set's New School Record As Broncos Turn In Strong Performance At Davis Invite

DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara track team was in Davis Saturday, March 10 for the Aggie Invitational. The Broncos participated in a total of 13 events, including the women's high jump, the men's long jump, and the first ever men's 4x100 meter relay. The meet also saw Santa Clara pick up it's first win of the season.

Mike Delaurenti set a new school record in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:34.36, breaking his previous record of 9:34.92. Freshman Stephen Koch joined Delaureneti in his first ever steeplechase race with a time of 10:08.65.

In another first, George Sanchez, Ryan Ward, Greg Stetler and Ryan Brown ran Santa Clara's first ever 4x100 meter relay, and finished sixth with a time of 45.35.

Ward had an impressive day as he also took third in the men's long jump with a distance of 6.52 meters (21 feet, 4 inches). Ward also joined Jay Cadweel, Tony Dipre and John Laughlin in the 4x400 meter relay in which they placed 7th with a time of 3:31.96 to win their heat.

Dipre had a solid performance in the men's 800 meters, finishing 9th with a time of 1:57.04. He was followed by Cadwell, who finished 25th in 2:02.02. Sophomore Ben Snyder and senior Chris Furnari finished 28th and 31st, respectively.

For the women's team it was a tough afternoon, but their performances sure didn't show it. After a seven hour wait and warm track conditions, the women's 5k runners finally got the call to the starting line, and Annie Murphy-Hagan led the Broncos, taking sixth place with a time of 18:21.55. Senior Lauren Swigart finished ninth at 18:31.10, and Adriane Puetz finished 11th, just seconds behind at 18: 38.53.

With final exams upcoming, the Broncos will return to the track in two weeks as they travel to the Hornet Invite, hosted by Sacramento State in Sacramento, Calif. on Saturday, March 24.
