Distance Squads Travel to Notre Dame

Sept. 29, 2005

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - In what is perhaps the farthest road trip in the history of Santa Clara University cross country program, the Bronco men's and women's distance squads will compete in the annual Notre Dame Invitational Friday at the Notre Dame Golf Course.

The SCU women will break the starting line at noon as one of 23 teams in the Gold Division 5,000-meter race. The men will start at 12:45 p.m. as one of 24 teams in its five-mile Gold Division race.

"The Notre Dame Invitational represents a great opportunity for our runners," said SCU head coach Tom Service. "It will provide an opportunity for our student-athletes to experience another region of the country as well as a different climate and type of racing. It will also help us expand the geographic recognition of our program, particularly if we compete well in the races."

Some of the schools entered in the races include Division III power Anderson University, Cincinnati, Louisville, Ohio, South Alabama, Valparaiso, West Virginia and Wyoming.

A smaller squad of SCU runners will also compete over the weekend when they participate in the Gator Invitational. The women's race at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, will begin at 8:15 a.m. Saturday morning, follwed by a 9 a.m. men's race.

Results for both the Notre Dame Invitational and the Gator Invitational will be available upon the conclusion of the day's events by clicking here.
