SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On this week's edition of the Bronco Weekly Sports Wrap, hosts and student-athletes Denzel Johnson and Nici Gilday get you caught up on Bronco sports. Last week featured a number of championship events with five Bronco sports competing for titles. Additionally, Sunday marked a special event with the 10th anniversary of baseball's Stephen Schott Stadium. This episode begins with the Bronco baseball team.
The Broncos fell in a midweek game against Cal Poly. However, they rallied from a Friday night defeat against Gonzaga to take the final two games of the series.
Stadium namesake and former Bronco pitcher Stephen Schott '60 threw out the first pitch Sunday. Schott is a longtime supporter of Bronco baseball, and his $4 million pledge in 2004 served as a major component in the foundation of the team's state-of-the-art facility. Schott was inducted into the Santa Clara University athletics hall of fame in May 2014.
Check out highlights and a postgame interview with junior center fielder TC Florentine after Sunday's 6-5 win. Next up for Bronco Baseball is UC Davis Tuesday at home for a 6 p.m. first pitch. Next weekend, the Broncos head to Moraga for a three-game series with the Saint Mary's Gaels.
Men's basketball player Jared Brownridge spoke at the Santa Clara President's Dinner on Saturday. Take a look at a portion of Jared's speech, as shot by EYEBRONCO. Congratulations to the four alumni award recipients recognized on Saturday and job well done to Jared.
Men's rowing took home three medals from the WIRA Championship Regatta in Lake Natoma last weekend. The Novice 8 boat won a gold medal, Novice 4 won a silver medal, and Varsity 8 won a bronze medal. EYEBRONCO talked to sophomore Karlsen Termini about the weekend. The crew returns to the water for Western Sprints on May 16. This event also serves as an IRA qualifier.
Women's rowing was also at Lake Natoma for the WIRA championships. They won a silver medal by taking second place in the pair event. Next up for the women is the West Coast Conference Championships May 16.
Track raced at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Friday and Saturday and competed in seven different events. The team's season continues on Saturday at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto.
Women's water polo finished fifth at the Gold Coast Conference Championships over the weekend. After falling in the opener to LMU, Santa Clara topped Fresno Pacific and Azusa Pacific to close out the season.
Sand Volleyball finished its season with two road matches last week. The team fell at Pacific and at Stanford.
Softball had a tough weekend against Pacific getting swept in a three-game series. They hope to get back on track beginning Tuesday at 4 p.m. at San Jose State. They finish the season vs. BYU this Friday and Saturday. Saturday at 12 p.m. will be Senior Day where the Broncos will honor Breezy Bernard, Ashley Haney, Jenna Krummen, Jordan Newell, and Bo Rios.
Men's tennis lost in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships to Gonzaga to close out its season at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Women's tennis also fell in the opener of the WCC Championships to LMU.
