Santa Clara Finish In Three-Way Tie For Second Place At WCC Championships

April 27, 2007

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - After a wild day of racing Friday's WCC Championships out on the waters of Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, the Santa Clara women's crew turned in their best finish since 1999, ending the day with 17 points, good for a three-way tie for second place with Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's.

Following the races, Santa Clara rowers Katie Fahrer and Ashley Tomberlin were named to the All-WCC team, as voted on by the conference coaches.

Gonzaga captured its 10th WCC championship by sweeping all three races Friday, for a total of 30 points.

The Broncos got the day off to a good start with a third-place finish in the I-Four race, finishing with a time of 8:07.5, two seconds behind second-place San Diego, and 21 seconds back of Gonzaga.

SCU then put themselves within striking distance of Gonzaga with a second-place effort in the II-Eight race, clocking in with a time of 7:16.2, 20 seconds behind Gonzaga, but five seconds ahead of third-place Loyola Marymount.

The final race, the I-Eight, determined the final results, as the Broncos, slone in second place heading in, fell into a tie with the Gaels and Lions after finishing fourth in the varsity eight race. SCU finished behind Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, and Loyola Marymount with a time of 7:04.8. But with their cushion from their solid finishes earlier, the Broncos were able to hold on to a share of second place in the overall standings.
