SCU Finishes Competition at WIRA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara men and women's crew teams turned out strong performances at this past weekend's Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships held at Lake Natoma in Sacramento. Both the men and women's varsity eight boats put in the effort to make it to the Petite Finals on Sunday.

On Saturday, the men's varsity eight boat pulled a 6:18.7 time for a fourth place finish in their second heat, 18 seconds off first place finishers UC San Diego, six seconds off the pace of UC Irvine, and only two seconds behind Orange Coast.

The women's varsity eight cut down their time from their performance in the WCC Championships the day before by two seconds for a time of 7:02.3, for a sixth place finish in the first heat. Gonzaga earned the first place spot, ahead of the Broncos by 17 seconds.

The Bronco men's varsity four boat finished the 2,000 meter course in the Petite Finals with a second place finishing time of 7:09.9, close behind Orange Coast's crew which finished about four seconds earlier. The Santa Clara women pulled through the finish in the Third Finals varsity four race in sixth place with a time of 8:58.6, about 17 seconds behind Lewis & Clark and Sonoma State who finished in first and second in the race.

On Sunday, Santa Clara's varsity men gave a strong performance in the pair, making it to the Grand Finals with a fourth place finish and time of 7:49.5. Loyola Marymount earned the first place spot in the race with a time of 7:25.2, followed by Loyola Marymount, and Orange Coast in third with a time only a tenth of a second ahead of Santa Clara.

The Bronco men also finished strong with a time of 6:31.8 in the varsity eight for a fifth place finish in the Petite Finals, earning 11th place out of the total 17 entrants. The women also competed in the Petite Finals of their varsity eight race, pulling in second place with a time of 7:05.8, exactly one second behind UC Santa Barbara in first, earning the boat an 8th place finish out of 12 overall.

Next, the Broncos will be traveling across the country for their final races of the season in Philadelphia, Pa. for the Dad Vail Regatta on May 11-12.
