SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Student-athletes on Santa Clara University's men's crew team have arrived for fall training. The group initiates official team workouts the week of Sept. 26-30. One year removed from winning the WCC trophy at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) championships, the Broncos will race three times this fall.

Sunday, October 23 Wine Country Classic – Petaluma Calif.
Saturday, October 29 Head of the American – Sacramento, Calif.
Sunday, November 13 Head of the Lagoon – Foster City, Calif.
The first two races will feature the squad's varsity boats, most likely a pair of eights. The fall's final race in Foster City will include the entire varsity and novice rowers.
"The returning squad is fairly experienced now," said Wieslaw Kujda, Santa Clara's head men's crew coach since 2005. "The leaders this year will be Daniel Cavillo, Abe Checkoway, Toby Platt, Spencer Rahn and Howard Limburg. All those guys have varsity experience, giving us 75 percent of our top boat returning."
The Broncos fall training schedule consists of 12 weeks of workouts. Kujda will emphasize technical improvement rather than preparing for particular races. The team's primary focus continues to be on the spring schedule and maximizing speed leading up to the WIRA championships next April.
"Immediately, we are going to try and establish some goals and we will change the training a bit," added Kujda. "The workouts will be heavy in the morning, doing some work here at Leavey, before going to the lake. This is aimed at improving our efficiency on the water."
