Broncos Rise To Second-Place Finish at Braveheart

March 7, 2006

BEAUMONT, Calif. - Day Two of the Braveheart Classic was a new beginning for the No. 42 Santa Clara men's golf team as they moved up nine spots on the leaderboard to claim second place along with Cal Poly out of twenty schools with a three-round team score of 884. For the Broncos it is their sixth top-three finish in seven tournaments this season.

Senior Michael Nicoletti paced the Bronco quintet Tuesday as the field completed Monday's second round, which had been suspended due to darkness, and then played the third and final round. Nicoletti shot a one-under 71 in the final round to complete his tournament performance of 217, good for fifth-place in the individual competition.

Jong Yoon and Tim Lynch each shot an even-par 72 in the final round while John Colyar carded a 73 to end the tournament. Eric Lillibridge rounded out the Broncos with a final-round 77.

Santa Clara's third-round team total of 288 was tied for the day's low with tournament champion No. 6 UCLA, which scored a three-round total of 865 with their five individuals to run away with the team title. The Bruins also claimed the individual title as Chris Heintz put together a trio of under-par rounds to card a 209 for the individual honors.

The Broncos will return to action in three weeks as they take to the links at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz from March 26-27.
