COPPEROPOLIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University golf teams concluded the WCC Championships from Saddle Creek Golf Course with a pair of third-place finishes Tuesday afternoon. Michael Nicoletti, who finished third in the men's individual competition, and Megan Stoddart, who finished tied for seventh on the women's side, earned first-team All-WCC honors for their performances while men's head coach Rob Miller shared WCC Coach of the Year honors in his first season at the post.
The SCU women end the 2005-06 season with their second-straight third-place performance at the WCC Championships, while the men's fates are now in the hands of a selection committee which will decide if the Broncos are awarded an at-large berth to the NCAA West Regionals. The West Regionals are scheduled to be held May 18-20 in Tucson, Ariz.
Loyola Marymount maintained their day one lead throughout Tuesday's final round, taking their first WCC title with a team score of 872. The Lions also claimed the men's individual title as well, as Brian Locke fired an eye-popping 64 Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 210 (-6), three strokes ahead of runner-up Ryan Gonzalez of San Francisco. The Dons also claimed second in the team standings, finishing five strokes off LMU's winning pace.
In the women's competition, Pepperdine claimed its fifth-straight title with a winning score of 899, besting second-place San Francisco by 25 strokes. Jayvie Agojo of the Waves took individual honors with a final score of 221, holding off teammate Carolina Llano by two strokes and USF's Jessica Potter and Gonzaga's Mary Kate Morgan by six.
Heading into Tuesday only three strokes off of the lead, the Santa Clara men struggled for most of the day, getting snake-bit by a couple of forgettable holes at the end of the front-nine. With LMU's Locke and a pair of USF golfers in Gonzalez and Jesse Galvon recording under-par scores, the Broncos could not keep pace with the hot sticks of the Lions and Dons, finishing the tournament with a team score of 886, 14 back of champion LMU.
"I think we're still in pretty good shape to make the Regionals," Miller said. "We didn't necessarily help or hurt our chances today, so we are still preparing to play in the West Regionals. We expect to be in it, but again, we are just going to have to wait until the committee makes its decision."
Nicoletti shot a three-over 75 to finish the tournament at 218 (+2), good for third place and All-WCC honors. John Colyar, Tim Lynch and Eric Lillibridge all finished tied for 13th and were named All-WCC honorable mention with a score of 225 while Jong Yoon rounded things out with a final tally of 227. For Nicoletti it was his sixth top-five finish of a solid senior year and his first All-WCC performance.
"He turned in a typical Michael Nicoletti-performance, he's been solid all year for us and an anchor for the team," said men's head coach Rob Miller. "Michael played very well for us here at the tournament and he deserves the all-conference honors."
Following the conclusion of the round, the conference handed out its postseason awards, at which Miller, SCU's first-year coach, was named Co-Coach of the Year along with LMU's Alex Galvan.
For the SCU women, it was a day which saw them come in hanging on to third place, and their consistent play Tuesday kept them there. The Broncos held out hope of catching second-place USF, who they trailed by 14 strokes heading into today, but the Dons fired a team score of 303, the best of the field on Tuesday, to distance themselves from SCU.
Still, the individual performances shone for the Broncos, as Stoddart shot a final-round 76 to finish with a score of 230 for the tournament, earning first-team All-WCC honors in her first season as a Bronco. Samantha Trask and Candice Palmer were named All-WCC honorable mention for their top-15 finishes as well. Jenny Nelson finished the tournament with a score of 249 while Corey Utsurogi rounded things out with a 252.
