HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Santa Clara men's golf team got a taste of what the women's team experienced in Hawaii as they battled rough winds and weather en route to a sixth-place in Monday's first round of the University of Hawaii Fall Intercollegiate at the Kaneohe Klipper GC.

In spite of the windy conditions, John Colyar managed to card a one-over par 73 to pace the Broncos, while Michael Nicoletti shot 74 and Eric Lillibridge and Tim Lynch tallied a pair of 75s to round out the Bronco scoring.

"Most of our guys got off to kind of a rough start but in the end they held it together," head coach Rob Miller said. "It was the kind of day where you try to get off to a start where you try to put yourself in a position to compete in the next two days. Being tied for sixth puts us in a position where we're excited about tomorrow and it gives us a chance to pick up some ground a little bit at a time."

Santa Clara currently sits tied for sixth with Louisiana Tech at 297, 14 strokes behind leader New Mexico State. Yet the Broncos are only seven strokes out of third place with two more days of golf to go, plenty of time to make up ground.

San Diego's Luke Antonelli and UNLV's C.J. Gatto share the individual lead heading into Tuesday's second round, each carding a 66 in Day One action.

The Broncos return to the links tomorrow morning to begin their pursuit of the leaders.
