Broncos Fall to Top Ranked Stanford

March 4, 2009

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team fell to 2-3 this afternoon as they came up short versus No. 1 Stanford, 7-0. With the win the top ranked Cardinal moved to 12-1 for the 2009 dual season.

The Broncos had strong showing on the doubles side of play, where Tommy Hicks and Kyle Dandan defeated Blake Muller and Jeff Zeller of Stanford, 9-7. On the singles side of play, Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong gave a strong performance, pushing the number four singles match to three long sets for Stanford's Blake Muller. Despite the outstanding effort, Muller edged out Hirakawa-Wong for the win.

"I'm disappointed with the loss, but I think we came out and played well in doubles," said SCU head coach Derek Mills. "This season we are playing as many of the best teams as possible. Stanford is the top ranked team in the country and these are the types of teams we want to play and compete with in the future."

The Broncos are back in action this Friday, Mar. 6, in Moraga, Calif. to take on West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
