SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's basketball program has hired Steve Drake as an assistant coach, head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson announced today. Drake began work on the Mission Campus last week. He shares responsibilities related to all aspects of the program, with his primary duties concentrated on scheduling, recruiting and working with the post players.
"Steve brings in a lot of basketball knowledge and experience," Bento-Jackson said. "However, his biggest assets are his energy and people skills. We are very excited to welcome him to the Bronco family."
Drake spent the past season as head coach of William Jessup University, also known as San Jose Christian College, where he led the Warriors to their first-ever winning season and an invitation to the USCAA National Championship.
"I am very proud to become a part of the tradition and the success of both Santa Clara University and the women's basketball program," Drake said. "I'm excited to jump right in and work with the players and coaches."
Drake also served as an assistant to the WJU men's program for two seasons and was the head boys' basketball coach at both Phoenix Christian and Cactus Shadows High Schools in Arizona. At the prep level, he boasts six conference titles, four final fours and two state championship appearances. Drake compiled a 146-41 record during his six years at Phoenix Christian.
Drake, who has a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix, had been working toward a masters in the same subject through Cambridge University.
