SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Jamie Broback scored 21 points and led No. 16 Minnesota to its seventh straight win, a 69-42 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday.

Janel McCarville added 17 points for the Golden Gophers (8-1) and Shannon Schonrock made a pair of 3-pointers to move into third place on Minnesota's career list with 121.

Santa Clara, which was playing its third Top 25 team in 15 days, entered play averaging a West Coast Conference best 73 points per game.

Minnesota successfully pounded the ball inside against the Broncos, with McCarville and Broback getting most of their points in the paint. The Golden Gophers outscored Santa Clara inside 26-13. Minnesota held a 26-2 advantage at one point.

The Golden Gophers never trailed in the game, as Santa Clara missed six of its first seven shots.

Minnesota made 14 of its first 21 shots and used a 19-2 run to open a 22-point lead late in the first half. McCarville scored eight points during the Golden Gophers' run, in which the Broncos were held scoreless for more than 6 minutes.

April Calhoun hit a driving layup with 8 seconds left in the first half to give Minnesota a 40-19 lead.

The Golden Gophers were making their first trip to California since reaching the Sweet 16 in 2003 at Stanford. Minnesota won the Santa Clara Shootout in 1992.
