Broncos Win 3-2 Behind Two-Goal Night from Matheson

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Wrapping-up the non-conference portion of its schedule and looking to finish September undefeated, No. 25 Santa Clara women's soccer beat Fresno State 3-2 in overtime. The Broncos move to 7-2-3 while the Bulldogs now sit at 2-7-3.

Having scored three goals in each of her first three seasons on the Mission campus, Lauren Matheson scored two goals, her third and fourth of the season, to set a new career high. Julie Johnston added her third of the season and Kat McAuliffe, Olivia Klei each had one assist while Katie Speidel had two.

"We have put ourselves between a rock and a hard place this season a number of times and we've been able to squeak our way out of the situation like today," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "From a coaching stand point its good for the players to play overtime games because a lot of games in the NCAA Tournament are overtime games, like ours last year. Having said that, we have to address being able to finish more of these chances and we have to start by getting a higher percentage of our shots on goal. The other thing is that we have had a lot of games and played teams that had some time off so fatigue has been a factor. We'll look forward to a couple of days off and then get ready for conference play."

Santa Clara will next play Fri., Oct. 5 at BYU at 5 p.m. Pacific in its only game of the week.

Morgan Castain of Fresno State scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute on an assist from Callie Hancock. Hancock took the ball and passed it to her right at the top of the box to Castain who took a touch and blasted a shot past Andi Tostanoski to make the score 1-0.

The Broncos dominated the first half, spending almost the entire 45 minutes on the Fresno State side of the field and a majority of time in and around the goal box. Despite outshooting the Bulldogs 16-3, the game entered halftime with the score 1-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Santa Clara finally got on the board in the 75th minute to even the score at 1-1. Speidel sent a cross-field pass from left to right to McAuliffe who bounced a pass to Matheson just inside the box. Matheson fired a volley off of one bounce and found the back of the net past the leaping goalkeeper Katie DeVault.

The Broncos took their first lead in the 85th minute. Johnston headed a beautiful pass from Klei right in front of the goal to right corner of the net but the lead wasn't long-lived as seconds later Nadia Pearl of Fresno State tied the game at 2-2 on an unassisted goal. Pearl hit a low shot to the right of the goal that Tostanoski didn't move for as she was shielded by a crowd of players.

Huerta nearly ended the game in the 90th minute but her low shot hit the outside of the left post and went out of bounds and regulation time ran out to send the game into overtime.

It took less than two minutes for Santa Clara to end the game in overtime. Matheson scored her second goal of the game from Speidel. Speidel sent a ball to Matheson outside the right side of the box and she dribbled in before firing a cross-goal shot that found the net to end the game.
