Bats Go Quiet in Softball’s Losses on Saturday

SACRAMENTO/DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara softball played a pair of games in two different locations on Saturday, coming up short in both games.  The first contest, played in the morning hours, took place at Shea Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State where SCU fell 6-0 to Utah Valley.  The Broncos took a short trip on the causeway to Davis for the afternoon game and fell 4-1 to Seattle at LaRue Field on the campus of UC Davis.

GAME 1: Utah Valley 6 – Santa Clara 0

Utah Valley beat Santa Clara 6-0 behind a big third inning and a complete game shutout by Brooke Saili.

The Wolverines (1-2) scored all six of their runs in the third including a three-run home run by Megan Gibbs off Broncos starter Hannah Edwards.  Rylee Thorpe, Kalena Shepherd and Taylor Wooten each had RBI singles in the frame.

Saili allowed just four hits, struck out three and did not issue a walk to post her first win of the year.  Allyson Ferreira had a double for the lone extra base hit for the Broncos (0-2).

Freshman Hazyl Gray came in relief of Edwards in the third and threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings, a day after making her debut at right field where she doubled in her first at-bat.

The left-handed freshman only gave up one base runner, on a hit, and struck out two.

GAME 2: Seattle 4 - Santa Clara 1

Seattle starter Grace Luderer threw six strong innings and the Redhawks lineup came up with timely hits to defeat Santa Clara 4-1.

Luderer gave up one run on three hits and three walks.  Her only blemish was a solo home run to Cameron McGinnis in the sixth.

The Broncos (0-3) had a runner in scoring position in all but two innings but were unable to take advantage of the opportunities.  Luderer and reliever Stefanie Madrigal held the Broncos to 0-7 hitting with runners in scoring position.

McGinnis' home run cut Seattle's (2-2) lead to 2-1 but Seattle answered with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth including a round tripper by Madison Kahwaty.

Santa Clara stayed in striking distance throughout the game as starter Regan Dias allowed just two runs in the first five innings before running out of steam in the sixth.

Dias scattered seven hits and four runs, three earned, en route to a complete game.

Seattle opened the scoring in the first on Jocelynn De La Cruz's sacrifice fly after back-to-back singles by Tai Wilson and Kahwaty.  They doubled the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on Olivia Viggiano's RBI single.

Alllyson Ferreira went 2-for-3 for SCU and Kahwaty also had two hits.
