Softball Splits Against CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –  Santa Clara softball hosted a day time doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday and came away with a split, winning the first game 9-0 in five innings before losing the second game 4-2.

GAME 1: Santa Clara 9 - CSU Bakersfield 0 (five innings)

Santa Clara pitching tossed another combined shutout and Ashley Trierweiler drove in four runs in the Broncos 9-0 run-rule win in five innings over CSU Bakersfield (3-17).

Sage Hager and Regan Dias limited the Roadrunners to four hits and one run for Santa Clara's (9-11) fourth shutout of the season and the second in the last three games.

The offense collected 10 hits and scored four in the first inning, three in the third and two in the fourth.

In the opening frame, the Broncos sent 10 batters to the plate.  Emma Bickford singled in a run, Sammy Needham had a 2-RBI single and Regan Dias drew a bases loaded walk to score four.

In the third, Trierweiler sent the first pitch from Kirsten Martinez over the right field fence with two runners on to push the Broncos lead to 7-0.  She added another RBI in the fourth on a sacrifice fly.

Hager improved to 5-3 on the year with her three inning effort.

Brianna Sanchez dropped to 3-5 as she was unable to get out of the first, giving up four runs, two earned on two hits and three walks.

Bickford and Morgan Salmon had two hits each.

GAME 2: CSU Bakersfield 4 -  Santa Clara 2

Santa Clara put the potential go-ahead run on base in the bottom of the seventh but CSU Bakersfield starter Reina Castillo pitched herself out of the jam to earn a complete game victory, 4-2, over Santa Clara.

Castillo entered the seventh with a 4-0 lead but Santa Clara (9-12) hit four singles and had a hit batsmen to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.  Sammy Needham and Morgan Salmon had RBI singles with two outs.  With the bases loaded, Cameron McGinnis came into pinch hit but grounded out to second to end the game.

Castillo (1-6) gave up eight hits, two runs and four walks over seven innings to earn her first win of the season.

CSU Bakersfield (4-17) scored two runs in the second and fifth for its four run cushion heading to the final inning.

In the second, the Roadrunners put up a pair on Kaia Johnson's RBI single and Maya Williams walk with the bases loaded.  Bronco starter Hazyl Gray struggled in her start with the walk to Williams being the final straw before being pulled out in favor of Hannah Edwards.

Gray (3-4) threw 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on a hit and three walks to take the loss.

In the fifth, Samantha Martinez doubled in a run to push the lead out to 3-0 and later came home on a Bronco error.
