CSTV To Broadcast SCU Volleyball Twice During 2003 Season

July 16, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's volleyball team will have two of its matches in the 2003 season featured as part of the AVCA Match of the Week on College Sports Television.

CSTV is the first 24-hour college sports television network that made its debut during the first fiscal quarter of 2003. Since then the network has established its programming schedule for the upcoming year which includes a partnership with the American Volleyball Coaches Association to showcase the premier matchup in the country that week.

Santa Clara, which reached a program high ranking of November 11 last season, will be showcased twice in 2003, the first of which will be against the University of Hawaii on Sunday, September 28 at 1 p.m. in the Leavey Center.

The Broncos' second live televised match will take place on Sunday, October 26th at 1 p.m. as SCU travels to Malibu, Calif., to take on West Coast Conference rival Pepperdine in a key league contest.

Head coach Jon Wallace, who has led the program to four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances in his first four seasons at the helm, returns for what he believes will be a great season because of some great senior leadership in Becky Biniek, Becky Potter and Kelli Sousa.

"This will be the most starters that we have returning since we won the WCC Championship in 2000," said Wallace. "Our three seniors are ready to duplicate that feat and surpass the team success that they enjoyed their freshman year."

Biniek returns after earning All-WCC honors in 2002. Sousa also garnered all-league honors while leading the nation in assists in 2002 while setting a new NCAA standard for assist average. Potter became the program's first All-America selection when she earned AVCA Second Team honors following her AVCA All-Pacific Region and All-WCC selections.

The Broncos report for practice in early August in preparation for their first match of the season, which will take place at the University of the Pacific on Friday, August 29 at 7 p.m.
