What Lies Ahead

Douglas, Katherine
Douglas, Katherine

By: Gabe Taylor

Katherine Douglas (KD) hasn't been thrown off by the outcome of last season on the volleyball court. With an entire summer in front of her, Douglas – and her teammates - will prepare to make another push at the WCC Tournament title. As a redshirt-sophomore, Douglas recorded 298 kills, with 23 coming against South Dakota. The California native caught up with SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) to reflect on this past season, and to discuss her plans for the summer.

SCB: What moment were you most proud of this past season?

KD: Although we lost to a ranked Texas team during preseason in three straight matches, I was really proud of the way our team fought throughout the match. The score was close in each set, and I felt that our team was confident in what we worked on during preseason. Also, after losing to UT Friday night, we came back the following day and beat UTSA and SMU in two close matches that went out to five sets each.

SCB: The team finished 11-16 last season. What could've gone better?

KD: While our record last season was not ideal, I think that our team did a great job of working through injuries and practicing hard everyday to improve. What's important now is that we can learn from our past seasons, and focus on next season.

SCB: What are you going to work on most for next season?

KD: In preparing for next season, our team will be most focused on executing the new systems we started working on in spring.

SCB: What are your expectations going into the season for yourself and for the team?

KD: Expectations for next season are to make it into the NCAA tournament by winning the West Coast Conference.

SCB: What are your plans for the summer? Is there one thing that you're most excited for?

KD: This summer I'll be going to Oahu with a couple teammates for a week. Then I'll be flying from Oahu to Maui to spend a week with my family in Maui. After Hawaii I'll be coaching SCU volleyball camps until July 22nd. And finally, during the last week of summer, before reporting for preseason I'll be taking a trip to Catalina Island with a teammate.

If I had to choose one thing I'm most excited for, it would be to meet up with the Hawaiian family I usually stay with every summer in Hawaii, and get in touch with some of my friends from Hawaii that I haven't seen in a while.
