  • Wilder Enjoys Coaching and Running on the Mainland

    Chantelle Wilder recently moved to California from Hawai’i to pursue a career in coaching cross country. Starting off coaching girls cross country at Los Gatos High School, Wilder is now in her second year of coaching at the collegiate level at Santa Clara University as an assistant coach with Bronco cross country and track. SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCU) sat down with Wilder to learn more about the history of her love for cross country and how she has demonstrated her enthusiasm in her coaching tactics with Bronco student-athletes. Wilder talks about how she thrived on the thrill of racing from a very young age, and shares how it has carried on throughout her education and onward into her career.
  • Bronco Track To Finish Season At West Coast Invite

    Santa Clara's track teams will head north to Salem, Ore. this weekend to run in West Coast Invite, a meet co-hosted by Portland and Willamette University. It's the second year the meet has been in place with a number of West Coast Conference track teams and a few competitors from other universities attending as well. Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro (FM), finishing up his second season at the helm, spoke about the meet earlier this week and what this senior class has meant to the program.

    The Bronco track team traveled to Sacramento State for the Sac State Open on Saturday and due to strong winds the team ran more for the challenge of competition than times, but still racked up another couple personal bests as they prepare for the West Coast Invitational next weekend.

    The Bronco track teams collected seven personal bests in addition to breaking two school records this past weekend at the Brutus Hamilton Invite at Cal and the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invite at Stanford. Sophomore Allie Sibole lowered the women's 1500m school record at Cal and senior Erin McCarthy lowered her own 800m record at Stanford.

    The Santa Clara track team, which had last weekend off, will gear it up again full strength this weekend when it travels to the Mt. Sac Relays and the Woody Wilson Invite at UC Davis. Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro, whose men's cross country team led the department in grade point average for the Winter 2012 quarter (click here for release), talked on Thursday about what the team is looking for this week, the great weather in the Bay Area and Erin McCarthy's early success this season.

    Leading the Broncos Athletics Department in grade point average quarter after quarter and running personal bests on a regular basis is nice, but it’s not enough for the Bronco men’s and women’s cross country teams. Following along with Santa Clara’s strong community service focus in the athletic department, both teams jumped on the bandwagon in March and had a fantastic time. The teams volunteered three Thursdays in March at Montague Elementary School in Santa Clara. The groups worked with the BAWSI Rollers Program at Montague.
  • Trade Your Bronco Colors for Green As We Celebrate Earth Day In Many Ways!

    Santa Clara University Athletics and Recreation are gearing up for the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day, Sun., April 22 with a number of active participants, including the Malley Center on the SCU campus. Just in time, the Malley Center's weight room is becoming a lot greener. In addition to Bronco volleyball player Megan Anders working as the SCU Sustainability intern (see article here), Bronco cross country runner Ezana Tesfu is the president of the SCU GREEN Club. With the hard work of Tesfu, the GREEN Club (which stands for Grass Roots Environmental Efforts Now) is hosting an Earth Day Festival on Fri., April 20 from 11 am – 2 pm on the Santa Clara Mall (between Benson and Kenna lawns) on the SCU campus. It's free and everyone is invited!

    The Bronco track teams hit the ground running this weekend when they ran at Stanford and at SF State after three weeks off due to finals and the Fresno State meet being cancelled due to bad weather. Both teams made the best of the time off and ran well Friday.

The senior from Medford, Ore. rebounded from an off-season injury to regain his form in his senior year.   • Bronco Cross Country Teams Lead The Way Again As Santa Clara Athletic Department Posts 3.0 + GPA For 14th Time In 15 Quarters

    Santa Clara University’s student-athletes recorded a 3.04 grade point average (GPA) for the Fall 2011 quarter, topping 3.0 or better for the 14th time in 15 quarters. In addition 70 student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher this quarter and 79 Bronco student-athletes have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.022.

    Three Broncos were named to the 2011 First Team West Coast Conference Cross Country All-Academic team on Wednesday and eight Bronco men and six Bronco women made the Honorable Mention list. All-WCC runner Ben Demaree, Kevin Oliver and Mary Reynolds were named to the WCC All-Academic First Team.
