Baseball Topped in Midweek Contest at San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – All the scoring came early in a 5-4 loss for Santa Clara baseball at San Jose State Tuesday night.

The Broncos (19-16) took a brief lead after a half inning but the Spartans (19-18) came right back with four in the bottom of the frame and added another in the second which allowed them to withstand Santa Clara's three-run third before both pitching staffs locked in.

Charles McAdoo got San Jose State on the board and in the lead with a two-run home run three batters into the bottom of the first. He knocked in the final Spartans run with a single in the next inning. Hunter Dorraugh added an RBI double later in the first and came around to score on a wild pitch.

Aaron Eden (4-4) ended up with the win in 1 2/3 innings of relief and Brady Hill collected his eighth save with a 1-2-3 ninth. Starter Micky Thompson was lifted after allowing three runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts and got a no-decision.

Five different Broncos collected a hit with JonJon Berring going 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch out of the leadoff spot. Eamonn Lance, John Hanley, and Michael Diaz all collected an RBI with Hanley and Matt Jew both crossing the plate.

Blake Hammond (0-2) took the loss while starting and going 1 1/3 innings. Hammond allowed five runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The bullpen was fantastic as seven pitchers allowed just four hits the rest of the way.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara has 18 games with double-digit strikeouts this season. The Broncos fanned 10 tonight.
