The Santa Clara Broncos (23-11) continue their postseason run when they travel to Dayton, Ohio on Wed. March 27 to play the Wright State Raiders (23-12) in the semifinal round game of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick. The game will air on AXS TV live at 6 pm Pacific with Kenny Rice and Darrin Horn making the call. SantaClaraBroncos.com will broadcast the game live with Anthony Passarelli making the call beginning at 6 pm.  KDOW 1220 AM will replay the entire game at 8:30 pm.

The winner of Wednesday's contest advances to the championship round against the winner of the other semifinal between Western Michigan and George Mason.  The best of three series starts on Monday, April 1, with the second game on Wednesday, April 3, and the third game, if necessary, set for Friday, April 5.

The Broncos and Raiders have split their only two meetings with Santa Clara winning 71-67 at home on Dec. 30, 2002 and Wright State posting a 76-62 home win on Dec. 15, 2001.

Santa Clara has won 23 games for just the fourth time in school history and is one victory shy of matching the school record for the second-most wins. The 2010-11 squad won five straight CollegeInsider.com tournament games and ended the season at 24-14. The school record for wins in a season was set during the 1968-69 season when the Broncos went 27-2.

The Broncos enjoyed their most successful regular season in nearly 20 years and had one of the best single-season turnarounds in West Coast Conference history in 2012-13. They won 21 regular season games for the first time since 1994-95 and their nine-game improvement in conference play, going from 0-16 last year to 9-7, is the second-best single-season turnaround in West Coast Conference history. The Broncos fell one victory shy of tying the all-time league mark, established in 1988 by LMU.

Santa Clara last played in the post-season in 2011 when the Broncos won the CollegeInsider Tournament (CIT) winning five straight games with the last three coming on the road, including a thrilling 76-69 title game victory at Iona. 

SCU is led by All-WCC first-team members Kevin Foster and Marc Trasolini. Foster is Santa Clara's all-time leading scorer and ranks No. 2 in the WCC with 2,322 points while Trasolini sits at No. 9 on SCU's list with 1,640 points.  Playing together for three full seasons, Trasolini and Foster have combined for 63 victories.  Add in the four wins from Foster's sophomore year before he broke his foot in the win at UCSB on Dec. 1, 2009 and the duo has won 67 games together during their time on the court (Foster played in six games in 2009 before being redshirted due to a broken foot and Trasolini was redshirted due to a torn ACL pre-season 2011-12).

The Broncos advanced to the semifinals and won their seventh consecutive postseason game with an 86-83 win at Purdue on March 25, their first over the Boilers in five tries. Kevin Foster led the Broncos with 34 points, matching a CBI record for the third-most scored in a tournament game, making 11-of-24 field goals and 9-of-13 free throws. He eclipsed the 2,300 mark in career points (2,322) and also had 8 assists. Foster exploded for 28 in the final 20 minutes on 9-of-14 shooting after scoring just six in the first half, including all three of his 3-point baskets. Raymond Cowels III added 13 points and Marc Trasolini scored 10 while Niyi Harrison pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Purdue took its largest lead of the game at 37-32 late in the first half using a 10-2 run over 2:36 and led 37-33 at halftime. Santa Clara chipped away tying the game at 41, 43 and 45 before reclaiming the lead at 46-45 on a free throw by Foster with 13:52 remaining. That ignited a 17-6 run over the next 5:56 capped by a Foster 3-pointer for a 63-51 lead with 7:56 left. Purdue would get within two points three times in the last 1:02, but Santa Clara was able to hold on thanks to another Foster 3-pointer and a pair of free throws from Brandon Clark.

Wright State reached the semifinal round with a pair of home wins, defeating Tulsa, 72-52, in the first round and Richmond, 57-51, in the quarterfinals.  Wright State won its first-ever Division I postseason game with a 72-52 win over Tulsa In the first round of the CBI on March 20. The Raiders' 23 wins are tied for the most ever recorded by the program since becoming a Division I member in 1987. They won 23 games in 2006-07 and played in the NCAA tournament losing in the first round to Pittsburgh. Wright State has no seniors on its roster and is one of four Division I teams to not start a senior all season.

Bronco Post-Season

It is the second time in three years and just the third time in 17 years that Santa Clara has played in the post-season.  It is the 17th post-season appearance in school history (20-17: 11-13 NCAA; 2-4 NIT; 5-0 CIT; 2-0 CBI). Santa Clara has won seven consecutive post-season games after defeating Purdue, 86-83, on March 25. SCU posted a 5-0 record to win the 2011 CIT with home wins against Northern Colorado and Air Force and wins at San Francisco, SMU and Iona to win the title.  In its previous post-season appearance Santa Clara defeated Maryland 91-79 in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament before falling 76-51 to Kansas in the second round, who advanced to the Elite Eight before losing to eventual NCAA runner-up Syracuse. 

Santa Clara won five games in the post-season for the first time in school history in 2011.  The last time it played at least four post-season games was in 1952 when the Broncos advanced to the NCAA Final Four in Seattle with wins over UCLA (68-59) and Wyoming (64-53).  It dropped games to Kansas (75-55) and Illinois (67-64) at that Final Four.  Kansas, coached by Phog Allen, won the national title with an 80-63 victory over St. John's, coached by Frank McGuire.  The tournament that year was the first to have a true "Final Four" format, with the winners at four regional sites advancing to the final site.

Five players on Santa Clara's roster (Kevin Foster, Marc Trasolini, Evan Roquemore, Raymond Cowels III, Niyi Harrison) played major roles in the team's run to the 2011 CIT title run, but none more than Foster.  He averaged 25.4 ppg two years ago, collecting two of his seven career 30-point games in the Broncos' five-game title run. Foster continued his post-season exploits by scoring a game-high 23 points in SCU's first round CBI win over Vermont and followed that with a 34-point night at Purdue on Mar. 25. In his last seven post-season games he's scored 184 points (26.3 ppg) making 69-of-128 field goal attempts (53.9%) and 29-of-79 three-point shots (36.7%). Foster's 34-point effort at Purdue tied him with Dennis Awtrey (1967-70) for the most 30-point games in school history with seven.

Coming Out

The Broncos were able to win their last two games by scoring 50 or more points in the second half of each contest and are undefeated this season (5-0) when reaching the half century mark in the final 20 minutes. Entering halftime tied 27-27 with Vermont, SCU outscored the Catamounts 50-40 in the second half to post a 77-67 win in the first round of CBI action on March 19. The Broncos scored a season-high tying 53 second half points at Purdue on March 25 to overcome a 4-point halftime deficit and advance to the semifinal round with an 86-83 win. In their first 32 games of the season the Broncos reached the 50-point mark in the second half just three times, the last coming on Jan 17 when they scored 50 in an 85-54 at USF. They tallied 53 second half points in a season-opening 106-66 win over Simpson on Nov. 10 and matched that two games later in an 85-65 win over USC Upstate on Nov. 20.  

Records

Kevin Foster may well go down as one of the greatest all-around players to ever compete in the West Coast Conference. One of just two players to score over 2,300 career points, Foster leads the WCC this year in steals and is No. 6 in assists. Foster has collected 2,322 points (second best in WCC history), 451 assists and 223 steals joining LMU's Terrell Lowery as the only players in WCC history to accumulate more than 2,000 points, 400 assists and 200 steals (Lowery: 2,201 points, 689 assists and 231 steals).  Foster is No. 2 nationally in active career points scored behind Lehigh's C.J. McCollum (2,361) who is out for the season with a broken foot.

Marc Trasolini (105), Raymond Cowels III (84) and Foster (121) have started all 33 games for SCU this year and have combined for 310 starts in their SCU careers. Evan Roquemore has started 32 of 34 games and has 87 career starts.  The remaining nine players on the roster have a total of 129 career starts with Niyi Harrison leading the group with 45.  

Foster became the all-time leader in games started when he took the court in SCU's win over LMU on Feb. 28. At Saint Mary's on March 2 Foster broke the school record for field goals made, topping Londale Theus who held the record since 1980 (Foster has 739, Theus had 712 from 1976-80). Foster also has the school career record in points scored, field goals attempted, three pointers made, three pointers attempted and minutes played.  Trasolini and Cowels III each have played in a school record 133 career games, surpassing Ben Dowdell, who participated in 128 games from 2007-11.

Four Square

There have been 31 players in the history of SCU basketball to score 1,000 career points and four of them are on the current roster. SCU was the first Division I school with three 1,000 point scorers on its roster on Dec. 15, 2012 when Evan Roquemore scored his 1,000th career point; and Santa Clara was the third school in Division I this season to have four active 1,000 career point scorers after Raymond Cowels III joined the club in the win over Pepperdine on Feb. 16.  

SCU is the first team in West Coast Conference history to have four 1,000 point career scorers in the same season. There are now three other teams nationally with a quartet of 1,000 point scorers: N.C. State accomplished the feat on Jan. 22, 2013 vs. Wake Forest, Davidson matched them on Feb. 9, 2013 vs. App. State and No. 1 Indiana accomplished this as well a few nights after Santa Clara on Tues., Feb. 19 vs. Michigan State.

Three of the four 1,000-point scorers are averaging double figures with Kevin Foster at 18.6 ppg (2,322 career points), Marc Trasolini at 15.5 ppg (1,640) and Evan Roquemore at 11.5 ppg (1,252). Raymond Cowels III averages 9.6 ppg and has 1,060 career points. 

Foster became SCU's all-time scoring leader, surpassing 1980 WCC Player of the Year and former NBA star Kurt Rambis, in a win at St. Louis on Nov. 14 and became the second player in WCC history to score 2,300 career points when he tallied 34 at Purdue on March 25. Foster sits at No. 2 after passing LMU's Terrell Lowery, who scored 2,201 from 1988-92. Foster has a school-record tying seven career 30-point games and reached double-digits in scoring 29 times this season and 111 times in his 129 game career. 

Marc Trasolini became the 11th Bronco to score 1,500 career points when he tallied 13 vs. Saint Mary's on Feb. 7. With 21 points at Saint Mary's on March 2, Trasolini became the ninth player in school history with 1,600, and he has 1,640. He needs 50 more to jump into the top 5 and pass Steve Nash (1,689, 1992-96).  He joins former Broncos John Bryant, Dennis Awtrey and Kurt Rambis as the only four to have collected 1600+ points and 800+ rebounds in their SCU careers.  

Evan Roquemore joined the 1,000-point club this season, reaching the plateau in a win at Pacific on Dec. 15. He scored his 1,100th career point at LMU on Jan. 10, becoming just the 25th player in school history to score that many. He scored career point No. 1,200 at Gonzaga on Feb. 20 and currently sits at No. 22 with 1,252. Roquemore needs 7 points to pass Mitch Burley (1,258, 1985-89) for No. 20 all-time.

Raymond Cowels III has played in all but one game during his four-year career (family funeral) and has started 64 straight times since the beginning of the 2011-12 season. He became the fourth member of the current roster to score 1,000 career points and the 31st in school history when he scored eight on Feb. 16 vs. Pepperdine. He scored his 1,000th point on a three-point basket vs. the Waves.  RCIII now has 1,060 career points and is sitting at No. 28 all-time.  He needs 61 points to pass Scott Lamson (1,120, 1981-85) and break into the top 25 all-time.

Well-Rounded

Marc Trasolini, named to the 2013 WCC All-Academic Team on March 1, is one of the 10 finalist's for the Senior CLASS Award nationally.  The men's Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Final Four.  Eligible seniors must have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in October. 

Trasolini became the fourth player in school history to be named to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American list on Feb. 19 when he was named third team nationally.  He is the only player in the WCC and Pac 12 to be named to the CoSIDA All-District Academic All-American list three straight competition years (2010, '11, '13).  Trasolini is in his fifth quarter of MBA work and graduated cum laude in March 2012 with a degree in Finance (3.65 GPA).

Kerry Keating had this to say about Trasolini in the community.  "On our annual trip to the Great America park to spend the day with Courageous Kids (kids with cancer) Marc has been front and center each year.  At 6-9 240, he is easily visible, but the kids feel his heart when he spends time with them because he is a good person, not because he is a basketball player and tall. Marc has been a fixture at our annual summer camp and relishes his role as teacher and role model, and has developed a comfort in being easily noticeable but has more so developed strength in being a role model and good citizen."

Randomly

Santa Clara is 18-2 this season when leading at halftime and has won its last seven games when holding an advantage at the break. SCU has outscored the opposition 1,212 to 1,032 (+180) during the first 20 minutes … Santa Clara has scored at least 60 points in all but two games this season and its total of 2,519 is the second-most in school history. The Broncos totaled a school record 2,810 points in 2010-11 when they played 38 games … Three of Kevin Foster's school-record tying seven career 30-point games have come in the Broncos' last six postseason contests. He tied a career-high with 36 points in a second round CIT win over Air Force on Mar. 18, 2011 and notched 35 in a semifinal CIT win at SMU on Mar. 25, 2011. His 34 points at Purdue on Mar. 25 tied for the third-most in the six-year history of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick and tied Foster with Dennis Awtrey (1967-70) for the most 30-point games in SCU history … The Broncos' point total in their 86-83 win at Purdue on Mar. 25 was their third-highest this season and the most they've scored in 2013.  Microwave

Kevin Foster was nicknamed 'Microwave' by his father Rick Foster during his youth after the Detroit Piston's Vinnie Johnson.  Johnson earned the nickname 'the Microwave' from Celtics guard Danny Ainge for his ability to score many points in a short period of time, heating up the offense. Keep Playing

Kevin Foster and Marc Trasolini have scored 1,159 points between them this season, good for No. 3 on the top scoring tandems list, and they need 79 combined points to match their school record of 1,238 which was set in 2010-11 (Foster 766, Trasolini 472). They became the eighth Bronco twosome to score 1,000 total points in a season on Feb. 28.

Trasolini's 259 rebounds combined with Yannick Atanga's 209 put the duo at No. 12 on the top rebounding tandem list with 468 boards between them.  Trasolini is already on the list at No. 3 with John Bryant in 2008-09 (610) and with Troy Payne in 2010-11 at No. 14 (451).

On the single season list, Foster now owns the top two spots in points after climbing to No. 2 with 631 after his 34-point night at Purdue on March 25. He owns the No. 1 ranking with 766 points scored during the 2010-11 season. Foster is No. 2 in threes made (102), threes attempted (289) and steals (81), and tied for No. 2 in field goal attempts (532). He is just two steals away from setting the single-season record. Trasolini is No. 5 in blocked shots (51) and tied for No. 16 in scoring (528). Raymond Cowels III is No. 6 for threes made (71) and tied for No. 2 in free throw percentage (.879). Evan Roquemore is No. 2 in assists (176). 

Climbing the Three-Point Ladder

Kevin Foster is the WCC's career leader with 413 after breaking a tie with LMU's Jeff Fryer vs. BYU on Jan. 12. Foster hit his record 364th career three knocking down a shot from the corner with 10:44 left in the first half vs. the Cougars.  Foster is No. 6 on the NCAA Division I all-time threes made list.  He needs to hit two more threes to move to No. 5 and pass Davidson's Stephen Curry (now starring with the Warriors) who made 414 career threes from 2007-09.  

Foster's 152 made threes in WCC games is No. 3 all-time in league history as he passed Gonzaga's Blake Stepp with 143 threes made in WCC games (2000-04) at Portland on Feb. 23 when he made four.  LMU's Jeff Fryer holds the WCC record in league-only games with 166 threes made in 49 games (1987-90) and Portland's Jared Stohl is No. 2 with 160 career WCC threes (2007-11).  Foster's three threes at BYU Feb. 2 broke two-time NBA MVP and former Bronco Steve Nash's school record for career WCC threes.  Nash made 132 in his 56 league games and is No. 2 all-time for the Broncos with 263 threes, a record Foster eclipsed early his junior year. Foster was the WCC Player of the Week on Jan. 21 for the second time this season after he averaged 27.5 ppg, including 57.1 percent from beyond the arc (12-of-21), in a pair of road wins at USF, winning 85-54, and 83-76 at Pepperdine. Foster averaged 33 minutes per game hitting six threes in both victories. He also shot 62.5 percent for the week (20-of-32) and recorded his first career double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds at USF.  On the week he averaged 6.0 rpg, 3.0, apg and 2.5 spg.

In SCU's 88-75 win over Air Force on March 18, 2011, Foster broke the school record with nine threes, tying a career-high with 36 points.  He also had a career-high 36 in Santa Clara's 85-71 win over Gonzaga on Jan. 20, 2011.  Foster shattered the WCC single season threes made record with 140 in 2010-11, leading the country, and grabbed the nation's top spot in threes made per game as well with 3.68.  

Foster's 768 points in 2010-11 were No. 6 on the WCC's single season points scored list as he finished as the leading scorer in a single season in the Bay Area as well.  He broke the school's single season mark for points scored, minutes played, threes made and threes attempted that year.  He was named first-team All-WCC and was named the WCC Player of the Month in February and March.  He was named the WCC Player of the Year by CollegeInsider.com.

One of the Bay's Best-Ever

With 34 points in a win at Purdue on March 25, Kevin Foster passed Stanford great Adam Keefe for No. 2 on the Bay Area career scoring list (includes Cal, Stanford, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, USF and San Jose State). Foster needs to score 15 more points to become the all-time leading scorer in Bay Area history.  Foster, who has scored 2,322 career points, passed Terrell Lowery for the No. 2 spot on the WCC chart (2,201 points from 1988-92) with a game-high 20 at Portland on Feb. 23. Foster would need to score 169 points to take over the No. 1 spot from LMU's Hank Gathers, who scored 2,490 points from 1987-90. Foster became SCU's career points leader, overtaking 1980 WCC Player of the Year Kurt Rambis, in a 74-62 win at St. Louis on Nov. 14, 2012.

Foster has reached double figures 29 times in 34 games this season, has topped the 20-point mark 17 times, and scored at least 30 in a game three times to lead the Broncos in scoring. Foster became the seventh player in West Coast Conference history to score 2,000 career points, reaching that mark on a runner in the lane early in the second half vs. Gonzaga on Jan. 5. Against No. 10 Gonzaga on Jan. 5, he became the fourth player in Bay Area Division I history, and the first in 21 years, to score 2,000 career points.
