Men's Basketball Back on the Court Saturday, Faces Sacramento State at Home

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After six days off, Santa Clara men's basketball will look to remain perfect at home on the season when it faces Sacramento State for the first time in 11 years.

The Broncos and Hornets will meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Leavey Center.

Santa Clara (9-2), which is 9-0 at home this season, is coming off a 71-52 victory over California on Saturday as Guglielmo Caruso led four players in double figures with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

The Hornets (6-1) also last played on Saturday, defeating Cal State Fullerton, 62-59, on the road. Sacramento State, which plays in the Big Sky Conference, is 2-1 on the road, including a win over Pepperdine last month.

QUICK HITS...
• The Broncos are in the midst of a season-long six-game homestand, which includes the West Coast Conference opener on Jan. 4 against San Diego.
• Five players are averaging at least 9.0 points, including three in double digits led by Guglielmo Caruso (11.3), Trey Wertz (11.0 ppg) and DJ Mitchell (10.7). Josip Vrankic is averaging 9.4 ppg and Tahj Eaddy 9,1. Caruso is the top rebounder at 5.5 per game and Mitchell second at 5.2. Wertz is averaging a team-high 3.6 assists pg and Vrankic is second at 3.5 pg.
• Santa Clara's 8-1 start was its best since opening a school-record 21-0 in 1968-69 on the way to a 27-2 mark and a trip to the NCAAs. The Broncos have won nine of their first 11 games for just the second time in the last 31 years and fifth in the last 51 (11-2 in 2012-13; 11-2 in 1988-89; 12-2 in 1977-78; 10-2 in 1969-70).
• Santa Clara has won its last 11 home games overall, dating to last season. That streak is tied for the third longest in Toso Pavilion/Leavey Center history (since 1975-76). ). The record is 14 in a row, which began with a 79-72 win over Marquette (Dec. 29, 1996) and ended with an 85-75 loss to San Francisco (Jan. 25, 1998).
• The Broncos have won 14 of their last 15 nonconference home games. The lone loss in that stretch was to Idaho State last season.

YEAR FOUR UNDER SENDEK...
The Broncos are heading into the their 113th year, including fourth under Herb Sendek, who has been successful in each of his three previous head-coaching stops. With a resume that includes 18 postseason appearances and three conference coach of the year awards, Sendek, was one of the three youngest coaches with 400 or more career victories. Having led the Broncos to winning records in two of his three seasons, he is in his 26th season as a collegiate head coach with stops at Arizona State, North Carolina State and Miami (Ohio).

TEAM NOTES...
• Saturday's win against California was the second this season vs. a Pac-12 Conference foe, following being victorious twice against teams from the league last year. Santa Clara had never posted two wins against schools from the conference in back-to-back years. The Broncos knocked off Washington State last month and defeated USC and the Cougars last season. Santa Clara went 2-1 against the Pac-12 this season and last.
• Santa Clara has had at least four players score in double figures in six games this season and won each one. The Broncos went 11-2 last season when at least four players hit double-figure scoring.

THE SACRAMENTO STATE SERIES...
The teams are playing for the first time in 11 years and the Broncos have won all six meetings. They have faced off four times with both as members of Division I. The Hornets moved from Division II for the 1991-92 season.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES...
Guglielmo Caruso notched his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds against Cal (Dec. 7). That total is tied for first in the WCC this season. He posted first career double-double vs Cal Poly (Nov. 8) when he pulled down a then career-high 10 boards to go along with 15 points. The sophomore followed up with another double-double vs Washington State (Nov. 12) with a career-best 22 points and 10 rebounds.
• Coach Herb Sendek shook up the starting lineup against Cal (Dec. 7) with Keshawn Justice and Jalen Williams getting the nod over Tahj Eaddy and DJ Mitchell. Justice made his second-career start and first of the season and Williams, a freshman, earned his first.
• Four starters return for the Broncos in Tahj Eaddy, Trey Wertz, Josip Vrankic and Guglielmo Caruso, but only Eaddy and Vrankic were on the floor to open all 31 games last season. Wertz started the final 29 and Caruso the last 20.
