Men's Basketball Faces Alcorn State in Final Nonconference Tilt

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After an eight-day break, Santa Clara men's basketball will look to extend its home-winning streak when it faces Alcorn State on Sunday.

Tipoff between the Broncos and Braves (4-6) is set for 2 p.m. in Leavey Center.

Last time out, Santa Clara (12-2) defeated Mississippi Valley State, 100-71, behind a season-high 28 points from Trey Wertz and a career-best 19 points from Jalen Williams, setting a school record for consecutive home wins to start a season (12). The Broncos shot 53 percent from the field and made 14 3-pointers.

Alcorn State downed Ecclesia, 122-71, on Dec. 20. The Braves have dropped all six games on the road this season.

The Braves and Broncos each finish up nonconference play on Sunday.

QUICK HITS...
• The Broncos are in the midst of a season-long six-game homestand, which includes the West Coast Conference opener on Jan. 4 against San Diego.
• Six players are averaging at least 8.0 points, including three in double digits led by Trey Wertz (12.1 ppg), Guglielmo Caruso (12.1), and DJ Mitchell (10.2). Josip Vrankic is averaging 9.9 points, Jalen Williams 8.4 and Tahj Eaddy 8.3. Caruso is the top rebounder at 5.6 per game and Mitchell second at 5.3. Wertz is averaging a team-high 4.1 assists pg and Vrankic second at 3.6
• Santa Clara has matched its best start since the 1977-78 season and opened 12-2 or better for only the second time in the last 51 years. The Broncos started a school-record 21-0 in 1968-69 on the way to a 27-2 mark and a trip to the NCAAs. The Broncos' 8-1 start this year was their best since 1968-69.
• Santa Clara has won its last 14 home games, dating to last season. That streak is tied for the third longest in school history and ranks tied for first all-time during the Toso Pavilion/Leavey Center era (since 1975-76). Santa Clara has not lost at home since a 66-55 defeat to Saint Mary's (Feb. 14, 2019).
• The Broncos have won 18 of their last 19, including 16 straight, nonconference home games. The lone loss in that stretch was to Idaho State on Dec. 7, 2018.

YEAR FOUR UNDER SENDEK...
The Broncos are heading into the their 113th year, including fourth under Herb Sendek, who has been successful in each of his three previous head-coaching stops. With a resume that includes 18 postseason appearances and three conference coach of the year awards, Sendek, was one of the three youngest coaches with 400 or more career victories. Having led the Broncos to winning records in two of his three seasons, he is in his 26th season as a collegiate head coach with stops at Arizona State, North Carolina State and Miami (Ohio).

THE ALCORN STATE SERIES...
Santa Clara and Alcorn State, which plays in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, are meeting for the third time. The Broncos won both prior meetings (1988 and 2012).

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES...
• Santa Clara has shot 55 percent or higher in five games this season, including 55.8 in the win over San Jose State (Dec. 18) and a season-high 59.6 percent against Idaho State (Nov. 22).
• In the 71-52 win over Cal (Dec. 7), the Bears were held to 28.6 percent shooting from the floor which was the lowest mark by an opponent since Boston College was held to 28.3 in a 62-45 Santa Clara victory on Nov. 29, 2015, in the finale of the Wooden Legacy.
• The margin of victory (19) vs. Cal was the second-most in the series. The Broncos won 44-23 on Jan. 27, 1931.
• Santa Clara won each game of the Cable Car Classic, which was in its 52nd year, by double digits and trailed for only 2 minutes, 21 seconds (all against Denver). The Broncos knocked off Denver, 81-64, on in opener (Nov. 27), downed Southeast Missouri, 87-75, on Nov. 29 and Cal State Fullerton, 70-55 in the finale on Nov. 30. to claim the tournament title.
• Santa Clara had its three-game winning streak against the Pac-12 snapped with an 82-64 loss to Stanford (Nov. 16). The Broncos down Washington State (Nov. 12) and knocked off the Cougars and USC last year. The longest stretch of wins against the Pac-12 is five in a row between Dec. 12, 1994 (88-83 win vs. Oregon) and Dec. 6, 1997 (68-55 win vs. Oregon State).

HOME COOKING
The Broncos are on an historic run at home as the team's current 14-game winning streak is tied for the third-longest in school history and is just one shy of matching the record in Toso Pavilion/Leavey Center.

At 12-0, Santa Clara has set the record for consecutive home victories to start a season. The Broncos had 11 twice, in back-to-back seasons, which established the school record of 22 straight home wins.

Parking is $10 in the main campus parking structure, which is located on Palm Drive through the main campus entrance (500 El Camino Drive).
