Men's Basketball Faces Mississippi Valley State on Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Carrying a 13-game winning streak in Leavey Center, Santa Clara will continue a stretch of six straight at home with a matchup against Mississippi Valley State on Friday.

Tipoff between the Broncos and Delta Devils is set for 7 p.m.

Santa Clara, which is 11-0 at home this season, is coming off an 89-84 win over San Jose State on Wednesday. Guglielmo Caruso (25) and Keshawn Justice (20) each posted career-high point totals and the Broncos shot 56 percent from the field that helped them overcome 58 points by the Spartans in the second half.

Mississippi Valley State fell 92-50 at Wright State on Tuesday. The Delta Devils (0-10) have played all 10 games on the road this season.

The Broncos will be off until Sunday, Dec. 29 when they face Alcorn State, which also plays in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

QUICK HITS...
• The Broncos are in the midst of a season-long six-game homestand, which includes the West Coast Conference opener on Jan. 4 against San Diego.
• Five players are averaging at least 8.0 points, including three in double digits led by Guglielmo Caruso (12.2), Trey Wertz (10.9 ppg) and DJ Mitchell (10.6). Josip Vrankic is averaging 9.7 ppg and Tahj Eaddy 8.6. Caruso is the top rebounder at 5.5 per game and Mitchell second at 5.2. Wertz is averaging a team-high 4.0 assists pg.
• Santa Clara's 8-1 start was its best since opening a school-record 21-0 in 1968-69 on the way to a 27-2 mark and a trip to the NCAAs. The Broncos have won 11 of their first 13 games for just the second time in the last 31 years and fourth in the last 51 (11-2 in 2012-13; 11-2 in 1988-89; 12-2 in 1977-78).
• Santa Clara has won its last 13 home games, dating to last season. That streak is tied for the fourth longest in school history and ranks tied for second all-time during the Toso Pavilion/Leavey Center era (since 1975-76).
• The Broncos have won 17 of their last 18, including 15 straight, nonconference home games. The lone loss in that stretch was to Idaho State last season.

YEAR FOUR UNDER SENDEK...
The Broncos are heading into the their 113th year, including fourth under Herb Sendek, who has been successful in each of his three previous head-coaching stops. With a resume that includes 18 postseason appearances and three conference coach of the year awards, Sendek, was one of the three youngest coaches with 400 or more career victories. Having led the Broncos to winning records in two of his three seasons, he is in his 26th season as a collegiate head coach with stops at Arizona State, North Carolina State and Miami (Ohio).

THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE SERIES...
Santa Clara and Mississippi Valley State, which plays in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, are meeting for the third time. The Broncos won both prior matchups. The Delta Devils are led by first-year head coach Lindsay Hunter who played 17 seasons in the NBA.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES...
Guglielmo Caruso notched his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds against Cal (Dec. 7). That total is tied for third in the WCC this season. He posted first career double-double vs Cal Poly (Nov. 8) when he pulled down a then career-high 10 boards to go along with 15 points. The sophomore followed up with another double-double vs Washington State (Nov. 12) with a career-best 22 points and 10 rebounds.
• Coach Herb Sendek changed the starting lineup the last three games with Keshawn Justice and Jalen Williams replacing Tahj Eaddy and DJ Mitchell. Caruso, Josip Vrankic and Trey Wertz have started all 13 games.

HOME COOKING...
The Broncos are on an historic run at home as the team's current 13-game winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest in school history and is just one shy of matching the record in Toso Pavilion/Leavey Center.

At 11-0, Santa Clara has matched the record for consecutive home victories to start a season. It was done twice and in back-to-back seasons (1967-68 and 1968-69), which established the school record of 22 straight home wins.
