Western Sprints Next for Men's Rowing

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing competes at Western Sprints Saturday at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California with an eye on qualifying for the IRA National Championships.

The Broncos will race at 8 a.m. (V8), 8:30 a.m. (2V8), and V4 (9 a.m.) boats.

"This is a very young crew with 10 first-year rowers spread throughout the three boats competing this weekend," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "Even with the late start to training this year, this team has really come together and we are really looking forward to the opportunity to compete at Western Sprints. We are going to face some tough competition and we have a lot of respect for Gonzaga, UCSD and USD so it is going to be a battle down the course."

Last time out, the Broncos took on Gonzaga up in Spokane and have faced several Pac-12 schools as well.

"We have had several tough races over the last month packed into a short time frame so we should be prepared for the race environment," Farwell said. "The team is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to compete this season and wants to say thank you to all those individuals and departments on campus that have made this season possible."

It's a new location for Santa Clara, but that isn't deterring them.

"We are typically at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova but due to the covid pandemic we had to relocate the championship regatta so this will be a new venue for us," Farwell said. "It should be a great venue and it is a very fair racecourse so there isn't any lane that has an advantage over the other lanes."
