SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Getting in one last event before a month-long hiatus, Santa Clara men's golf tees it up Monday at the competitive 15-team Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The two-day, three-round event, hosted by Cal, will be contested on the 6,734-yard, par-71 Meadow Club in Fairfax.
The Broncos claimed a runner-up finish at the prestigious event last season and will have several players familiar with the layout competing when the tournament gets underway Monday morning.
"This is an important tournament for us since we don't want to move backward in the rankings," head coach Rob Miller said.
With his second top-10 finish in as many events to start the season, junior Matt McCarty led the Broncos to a fourth-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate their last time out. Sophomore Berk Harvey earned his first career top-10 in Toledo two weeks ago and played this event last year as an individual. Santa Clara will field the same five-player team that shot an 872 at the Inverness Club with senior Derek Ackerman and freshmen Nordin van Tilburg and Konrad Brauckmeyer.
The Broncos will get a good look at their West Coast Conference foes with teams from Pepperdine, San Diego, San Francisco and Saint Mary's scheduled to compete. Pac-12 powers Arizona State and Cal are among the favorites in a field that has 11 California schools vying for the team title.
"It's difficult to really know what a good result will be since we don't know how good many of the teams are going to be as the season progresses," Miller added. "All we can do is play the best we can and let the rest of that stuff fall as it may."
First-round action is scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
