Men’s Golf Places Fifth At WCC Championship

STOCKTON, Calif. – Senior Derek Ackerman shot a 4-under 68 leading Santa Clara men's golf to a final-round low 283 and fifth-place finish at the West Coast Conference Championship tournament with an 865 total.

The Broncos compiled the fourth-lowest score of the three-round tournament, snapping a tie with Pacific and Gonzaga while overtaking LMU for the solo fifth showing.

"It was a nice round," head coach Rob Miller said. "Four of the guys played well and it was nice for Derek to finish his career on a positive note. A 68 here is a good round."

The Broncos picked up just one stroke on eventual champion Pepperdine, which rallied past second-round leader USF to take the team title with an 851 total. USF (854), Saint Mary's (860) and BYU (861) finished ahead of Santa Clara.

"We finished where we were slated to be," Miller added. "That's the way things work this time of year, you kind of are who you are."

After not having a player score below par in the first two rounds, Ackerman birdied five holes on Saturday for the Broncos' lowest round of the tournament. Ackerman also matched the tournament-high by carding an eagle in each of the first two-rounds.

Freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer scored 72 in all three rounds and Matt McCarty was at 1-over 73 on Saturday.

The trio shared 15th-place at even-par 216, six-shots behind Pepperdine's RJ Manke and LMU's Riley Elmes. Manke claimed individual medalist honors on the first sudden-death playoff hole.

Sophomore Jack Avrit was at 2-under 70 on Saturday, finishing 54 holes in a tie for 20th at 2-over 218.

Berk Harvey finished at 230 (72-77-81) for a share of 39th.

"We had a tournament that was kind of typical of our season," Miller said. "We couldn't get all five guys hitting on all cylinders. We had four playing against five and that's a tough way to go in this conference that's loaded with talent.

"We'll reload for next year and try to get better. The guys this year got a lot of good experience and I think they'll come back better for it next year," Miller concluded.
