Santa Clara Upends No. 19 UC Santa Cruz 5-3

Oct. 1, 2005

Santa Clara, Calif. - Before Santa Clara took on No. 19 UC Santa Cruz at the Leavey Center pool in a key Western Water Polo Association conference match, head coach Keith Wilbur honored seniors Grant Allison, Austin Brizgys, and Jon Greco, paying tribute to all the hard work and effort put forth over their collegiate careers. SCU would not let this year's graduating class leave without a victory, as the home team defeated No. 19 UC Santa Cruz 5-3. The Banana Slugs were the second straight ranked victim of the Broncos, as No. 10 Pacific was dealt a 9-8 loss by Santa Clara on Thursday afternoon.

"It was a low-scoring game and good defensive effort put forth by both teams," said Wilbur. "I'm glad we were able to come out a win."

Five different players scored for Santa Clara, as Greco, Tom Hendrickson, Charlie Moore, Kevin Starry and Jack Wall all managed to get the ball past the UC Santa Cruz goalie. In addition, Moore contributed two assists and one steal, while Wall pitched in one assist and three steals. Mike Petersen led the team on defense, turning away nine shots while adding two steals.

Santa Clara improves its record to 8-5 on the year and 7-4 in the WWPA. The Broncos return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to the campus of UC Berkeley to take on the Golden Bears in a key non-conference match-up.
