Santa Clara Edges Out Santa Cruz 5-3

Nov. 5, 2005

Santa Cruz, Calif. - After a rough 0-3 showing at last weekend's Aggie Shootout, the Santa Clara men's water polo team came through in the clutch to score an important 5-3 victory over Western Water Polo Association rival and host UC Santa Cruz this afternoon. The win snaps the Broncos five-game losing skid and puts their overall record at 14-13.

"It was a good game by our team. Santa Cruz is always tough competition and we were able to pull the close victory," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Coming out on top in a tight game was so important after last weekend and I think this win will get the us back on the right track for the conference championships."

In a game dominated by good defense, the Broncos had four players step up to give them a scoring boost. Josh Early led the way with two goals on the afternoon, while Mike Detoy, Tommy Kelly, and Jack Wall all chipped in with a goal each. Wall put forth an outstanding overall performance, tallying four steals, two steals, and drawing one kickout. Michael Petersen anchored the SCU defense, posting nine blocks and two steals.

Santa Clara returns to the pool when the team travels to Stockton, Calif. to face No. 9 Pacific on Saturday, November 12. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
