No. 9 Arizona State Shuts Out Santa Clara on One Hit, 5-0

TEMPE, Ariz. - Three Sun Devil pitchers held Santa Clara to one hit as ninth-ranked Arizona State (15-5) shutout Santa Clara (7-10) for the second time, 5-0 today at Farrington Stadium.

Erica Beach began the game and pitched three innings of no hit ball, Kristen Swetel, who pitched a one hit fourth inning, relived her. Kirsten Voak (3-1) then came in for the final three innings to post the win. Voak also gave up no hits, while striking out four.

Both teams held each other scoreless until the Sun Devils third inning when they exploded for five runs on six hits.

Jennifer Forner started the inning with a single to center field. Kristin Farber then grounded out to the pitcher, advancing Forner to second. Nichole Thompson followed with another single to center, allowing Forner to go to third base.

Kara Brun then hit another single to center field to drive in Forner and advance Thompson to second. Beach then singled to right field to drive in Thompson and advance Brun to second.

Missy Hixon then nailed a two-run double to left field, and a Phelan Wright single to drive in Hixon for the final run followed that.

The Broncos' sole hit came in the fourth inning by Deanna Rodriguez, a single to left field.

Santa Clara also used three pitchers in the game. Krista Barry (5-4) pitched the first three innings, followed by an inning by Rodriguez. Jenny Rivera then threw the final two innings.

Wright led the Sun Devils, going 2-for-3 with a RBI. Hixon tallied two RBIs, while Brun and Beach also had a RBI.
