Santa Clara Women's Soccer Tops Cal Poly 2-1 in Season Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The third-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team defeated Cal Poly 2-1 tonight at Mustang Stadium to begin the 2000 season.

Freshman forward Kristi Candau, of Los Altos, scored her first collegiate goal at the 60-minute mark for the game-winner. An assist was earned by senior forward Megan Hovarth.

The Broncos' first goal of the night was netted at the 52:32 mark when senior midfielder Rachel Weber scored, assisted by freshman defender Chardonnay Poole of Claremont.

Cal Poly countered less than two minutes later, at the 54:08 mark, as Mustang Sandy Oceguera's shot tied the game.

Santa Clara posted 16 shots on goal, while Cal Poly recorded five.

The Broncos' home season opener will be next Friday, Sept. 1 against Oregon. The match will begin at 3 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
