Box Score

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Santa Clara University softball team fell to sixth-ranked Washington 3-2 this afternoon to open play at the Chevron Paradise Classic, hosted by the University of Hawaii at Rainbow Wahine Stadium.

The game was delayed from Thursday due to rain, resulting in poor playing conditions at the Stadium.

The Broncos, 2-4 on the season, will face Louisville later this afternoon. The Huskies improve to 1-0.

Freshman left fielder Jessica Clee opened the game with a home run off Washington pitcher Tia Bollinger. The Huskies countered in the second inning with two runs: a single by Amy Hanson and a home run by Dena Tyson that brought both home.

Santa Clara tied the game in the bottom half of the frame. Freshman short stop Shannon Linerud posted a one-out double to left field. With another out on the scoreboard, junior pitcher Jaime Forman-Lau knocked a triple to right field, bringing in Linerud.

The next four innings went scoreless, taking the game into an extra frame. According to international rules, a player starts the inning at second base. Husky Kristen Rivera hit a two-out single to bring that runner home.

Forman-Lau takes the loss for the Broncos, although she struck out four during the contest. The Broncos out-hit the Huskies 6-4.

Santa Clara remains at the tournament and will play Oklahoma State and host Hawaii on Saturday. Seedings for Sunday's single-elimination round will be determined based on round-robin results.
