Softball Splits with Humboldt State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team defeated Humboldt State 5-1 in the second game of the doubleheader this afternoon at Marsalli Park. The Jacks took the early game after 15 innings of play with a score of 2-1. The Broncos are 7-8 overall, while the Lumberjacks move to 8-8.

Santa Clara rallied early in the second game against the Jacks. Freshman Jenny Brown led off the game with a single to second. Vanessa Werner singled and advanced to third on an error by the Jacks third baseman, scoring Brown. Werner was able to score on the next play of the game off a sacrifice fly from senior Tracie Hall.

The Broncos added to their lead in the third inning starting with a base hit by Werner. With two outs, Rachel Sherman singled to left field. With runners on first and second, Coresta Salas was hit by a pitch to load up the bases for Santa Clara. Shannon Linerud then drove in two runs with a single to center field.

Santa Clara added their fifth run in the bottom of the sixth. Jennifer Ponzo doubled to left center and advanced to third on a ground out by Keri Reisinger. Ponzo scored on a single to center by Brown.

Freshman pitcher Liz Courter shut down the Jacks offense as Humboldt State only scored one run in the seventh. Kelly Sosinski doubled to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sosinski reached home on a ground out to second by Jordan Dillon.

Courter improves to 1-1 on the season. Emily Weitzel takes the loss for the Jacks and moves to 5-4.

In the first game, Santa Clara scored one run in the first and held the Jacks to the one run lead until the sixth inning when Humboldt State tied the game. The two teams battled to break the tie until the Jacks scored in the top of the fifteenth inning.

Jaime Forman-Lau pitched the whole game for the Broncos and totaled 18 strikeouts. With the loss, her record goes to 5-4.

Santa Clara remains at home and will host UC Davis on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
