Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team defeated Fresno State 3-0 in the opening game of a doubleheader against the Bulldogs this afternoon in Fresno. Santa Clara's record moves to 10-9 on the season after the Bulldogs captured the nightcap by a 5-1 score.

It was a pitchers' duel in the first game, as Jaime Forman-Lau struck out six for the Broncos, while Bulldog pitcher Jamie Southern recorded seven Ks. The contest went into the top of the seventh scoreless, before Santa Clara scored three runs to produce the victory.

Freshman second baseman Jenny Brown led the Broncos with a two-out triple in the seventh inning to bring in two runs. Senior Coresta Salas earned a single and was on second after a Bulldog error that also put senior Roni Rivera on base. Brown scored on a wild pitch.

Santa Clara finished with five hits and no errors.

In the second game, both teams scored one run in the second; the Broncos earning the tally when Salas singled to bring in Keri Reisinger. Reisinger was pinch running for senior Tracie Hall, who singled to left field to start the inning. Sacrifices by Rachel Sherman and Shannon Linerud moved Reisinger around the bases.

Fresno State scored four runs on six hits in the sixth for the victory.

The Broncos return to action next weekend at the National Invitation Softball Tournament, hosted at the Sunnyvale Complex. Santa Clara opens against Virginia Tech on Friday, March 7 at 5 p.m. and will follow with a 7 p.m. contest against Arizona State.
